CNN's Begala: Trump will 'dump Pence' for Haley on day of Democratic nominee's acceptance speech "This is not a prediction. It's a certainty. On Thursday, July 16 - that's the date the Democrat gives his or her acceptance address - on that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He's going to dump Mike Pence and put Nikki Haley on the ticket to try to get those suburban moms," Begala predicted during a panel discussion at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's (AIPAC) conference in Washington, D.C. "You watch. Guaranteed," Begala said. "Trump put Pence in charge of coronavirus to throw him under the bus." I haven't seen much of her and don't know a ton about her (so don't roast me too bad) but what I have she has come across well enough.
I hear that once these things get into cyberspace in web 2.0, it's hard to get rid of them unless you reformat your hard drive.
It’s smart on its face, but when you dig into why Haley is so attractive as a Republican to those voters its because she doesn’t have the stink of being in the Trump cult. Give her 3 months of being tied to the hip with Trump and she’ll be just as unpopular as Pence. The issue is Trump. Not Pence. The only way he can either suppress or win back the suburbs is if he can convince them that Biden is worse, and the reason why they were convinced Hillary was worse in 2016 was because of James Comey who gave the accusations credibility coming from an Obama appointed official. Haley though makes sense... if you can keep her seemingly clean and independent looking to voters which is a stretch. My prediction is that Trump would turn on her because he’d feel threatened that the GOP deep state were trying to replace him by forcing Haley on him. That seems highly likely.
I think for the reasons above, if I'm Haley, I stay far away from this administration and anything along the lines of what's proposed in this thread. It's a lose-lose for Haley...if Trump wins, he takes all the credit and then Haley has to deal with being associated for 4 more years as things begin to crumble around the House of Cards Trump has built. If Trump loses, Haley gets the blame from Trump and her career is basically over. Best-case for her, in this scenario, is that Trump wins, she takes some time off after those 4 years and then runs 8-12 years off in the future. Not sure she wants to wait that long, especially since she'd be a top candidate in 4 years if she doesn't associate with Trump.
Yes, Haley is one of the few people able to escape the Trump administration relatively unscathed. She’s played it smart up to this point. I’m not sure she would want to jump on a sinking ship. However, she may feel that being on the ticket positions her well for 2024 and beyond even if Trump loses in November. If Trump does replace Pence, it would really be a desperation move by Trump. Pence has been super loyal to Trump. But, we all know that Trump will do literally anything to win an election.
I think that's 100% right, but I will say that when she went on her book tour a few months ago, she signaled a change in tone & rhetoric to align to Trump. It was certainly not becoming of her, and shows how she'd likely drop in favorability quick if she went this route, but I wouldn't rule it out that she un-wisely wants the VP & heir apparent power bad enough to make the jump now & no doubt the RNC doesn't care about her longterm favorability & just wants a 2020 win. I do think there's some reality to what this source is telling Begala. No doubt there are serious discussions with GOP old hats & their strategists who see what is happening in the suburbs with the 2018 mid terms and the Biden Super Tuesday surge and not trying to make this happen. If Biden can win the nomination, win Wisconsin/Mich/Penn, and continues this surge we've seen in the suburbs, Trump is going to get killed in November.
