In other words Sony admits to losing the format war.

Blu-ray definately has the studio support and lots of high profile releases coming this year (Pirates, Cars).

Having said that, this new marketing campaign seems a bit dubious considering the Buy 1 Get 1 free on Sony Blu-ray titles that has been going on this year (Best Buy, Fry's last week).

7500 copies sold for that masterpiece "CRANK" isn't exactly relevant

i guess we have a winner!

7500 units? 4100 units? Those numbers are pathetic. They're both losing. And I saw several PS3's at the Fry's in Austin today, while looking for some speaker stands. (don't go to Fry's looking for speaker stands... crappy selection)

PS how did they sell that many copies of "Crank", did they bundle it with Wii's?

quick question when i see crank available in xbox live marketplace to rent in high-def do those numbers get factored into crank sales? i mean while they are not sales sony must sell the rights to xblm to offer it correct?

Based on some of their prior comments (especially regarding the Wii), I tend to believe the opposite of what Sony says.

They may indeed win the format war, but this announcement is premature

That's not why Sony is declaring Blu-ray the winner. Not that the reason why they're doing that is much better.

As of a couple of weeks ago, I think total disc sales for each were around 440K (according to NPD IIRC). Not sure how that compares to the numbers for DVD when it launched, but it does have a lot of growing to do.

I think Crank is one of the better BR movies in terms of video quality:

Probably why it sold above average.

No. These are just disc sales for HD DVD and Blu-ray.

FWIW, Sony doesn't even own the rights to Crank. Lionsgate does I believe...and Universal does in the UK IIRC, meaning it is/will be HD DVD only over there I guess.

    Got to love format wars.

Vivid has "signed off" on Blu-ray (4-5 BR movies this year assuming BR continues to do well IIRC), primarily since they found a Blu-ray disc replicator willing to make their movies. Most of the BR replicators are owned by Sony or also make discs for WD, and neither company wants p*rn to be made at the same replicator. That leaves few options for p*rn studios (one to be exact, according to Vivid), at least until there are more BR disc replicators...assuming they aren't also owned by Sony and/or create discs for WD. I don't think any of the other p*rn studios have had the same luck as Vivid (especially since Vivid won't reveal who is helping them).

I doubt p*rn will have the same influence on these format wars as they did with vhs vs. beta. Back then they didn't have major alternative vehicles like the internet or dvds. There's much less at stake for the p*rn industry in this battle. Regardless of who "wins" between blu-ray and hd-dvd, I doubt they'll overtake the internet (which is cheaper and easier to distribute) or dvds (which are cheaper to make and has a much bigger infrastructure) anytime soon.

Does anybody know when Blu-Ray movies are gonna be available for rent at Blockbuster? I really wanna check these Blu-Ray movies out, but I don't wanna buy one.

I think they're already doing it at select stores (as a "test").

Netflix is probably your best option.
