I have the original 60gig fatty PS3 , but unfortunately she caught the YLOD (yellow light of death). My PS3 is out of warranty so it will cost me about $180 (repair+shipping) to fix the beast through Sony. My other option is to pay $120 to get a 120gig PS3 Slim. What do you guys think? I loved my ps3 fatty but I would hate to pay for it to get fixed and then a couple years later is it craps out on me again. Any info is very appreciated. **UPDATE**: (Option 3) Just found out Play N Trade in Houston will repair the ps3 (in shop) for $120 with a weeks turn around.
I have the 80g fatty and mine caught the YLOD about a week ago. Im just gonna settle for the slim. RIP Fatty
If you enjoy the superior, older model PS3... You could purchase a used model on ebay and a squaretrade warranty.
personally i would get the fatty because 60 bucks does not buy you a SACD player and a ps2 plus the fatty is faster in loading blu-rays. but if you will never use these features go with the energy sipping slim.
what is a SACD player? I never played any ps2 games on my ps3 except for GOD of War 2. How much faster in loading blue rays?
Keep us updated on how it goes. I have an 80 gig that won't read any discs at all. I would definitely like it fixed instead of buying a new one. What's their warranty? I looked at the site but didn't see any details.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHMW7XR59Fw This worked for both people I know with YLOD and no need to even take it apart.
Man sorry...sounds like such a tease. There are lots of videos on youtube on how to fix but it can be pretty intense once you get to the motherboard area.
Noooooooo. Don't use 3rd-party repair places, ever. If you use Sony you will always at least be guaranteed they will send you back a refurb unit if they can't fix yours. I had a 3rd-party place fix mine, it broke 3 days later, and then I wasn't even allowed to pay Sony to fix it anymore, because it had had 3rd-party repair work done. Trust me, better to just stick with Sony.
Case closed!! I will be sending it back to Sony . Thanks drex. The question is repair my fatty or get a slim? hmmm
