Is anybody out there pre-ordering this? I was thinking of ordering one but is it even possible to still get one? There is a site called orderplaystation2 which is offering pre-ordering and appears to be the official buying site. Can they fill demand? They don't talk about not having any available. All other sites state their all pre-ordered out.

If that is the official site, they have theirs marked up $100 to $399.95 whereas other sites offer it for $299.95. Are they jacking the price because they are the only ones left in the USA with American PS2s available that will ship on time?

What to do? Too late or bite my tongue until next year? Should have pre-pre-ordered. OUCH.

Pre-order at Toys R US or online at most of the stores that sell toys.

THIS will be my christmas gift to myself. With a new baby on the way, I don't know how much I will have left to play. But, I am young, healthy and ready for the challenge!!!

If I pre-order from Toys R Us, I surely won't get it by Christmas. Recall the debacle they had last Christmas when supply couldn't fill demand. There must have been 2,000 little kids crying on Christmas morning because Toys R Us didn't have Pokemon gameboys but kept selling them anyway. All they could do was issue some discounts and apologize. The bottom line is retailers...online or otherwise...should know how many units they have ordered and, based on that, expect that many. But, of course, they want to keep the consumer guessing by not posting anything. Then, you won't get it until March of 2001 and you won't be able to cancel your order if you find it elsewhere. After all that, you would think Toys R Us would have wised up....are they in way over their head on PS2 pre-orders already. Their site is playing dumb and won't tell me. Argh.

I'm not so sure I want one of these PS2s. I was thinking I could get the DVD player and gaming system all in one but, with a new computer on the horizon for me, is it even worth it. Can't I play the same games on the computer and hook it up to my TV(or HDTV in the future)? I think so. Some games may not be PC enabled yet but they probably will be in the future.

I don't even know what I'm doing. I'm no gamer. I'm a gamer wannabe. I play Q3 demo maybe three times a week for a total of an hour. I'm sure I would play more if I had the hardware capability. But, hell, the latest PC and GeFORCE2 video card will blow the Playstation2 and X-box out of the water. The only problem...the games to take advantage of it are not there. DOH! You can't win. Either buy a gaming console with games that take advantage OR buy a PC with games that don't.

Speaking of games, anyone ever go out to Shockwaveand play those classic arcade games using your Shockwave control? When I was a kid, I could play Stargate(or Defender II) for like 8 hours on one quarter at the local 7-11. It's great playing that game again...for free. Check it out if you haven't. I was pleasantly surprised it's all free.

Maybe I will just let the money burn a hole in my pocket some more. If Toys R Us can fill demand, I may order from them if I get on or near street date. Otherwise, it may not be worth the wait.

What do ya think? What to do...ho hum.

ROckets03,

I don't play Nintendo or any other console games. Just remembered reading the article and thought I would provide the link for you.

DC sports:

Console games(CON) vs. PC games(PC)
---------------------------------------
CON: better sound support for Dolby Pro Logic/soon to be Dolby Digital; can use A/V receiver surround sound decoder and Speakers(aka Home Theater)

PC: weak sound support unless high profile games(like Q3, Unreal, etc.); game sound may vary drastically; may or may not be able to output signal to home theater; may only be able to use PC sound card and speakers; quality of sound varies.
---------------------------------------------
CON: consoles play out on TV screen; good to great quality

PC: usually play on smaller monitors unless video card has TV out(even then...quality can be crappy); improves with HDTV support
---------------------------------------------
CON: cheats galore for all games if wanted

PC: usually limited cheats(if any)
---------------------------------------------
CON: well designed games; high replayability; games take advantage of console's hardware capabilities

PC: quality varies; may have low replayability factor; games don't take advantage of latest advances in PC...usually set to some minimum spec where the better the hardware, the better the gameplay; manufacturers usually want to produce game to lowest minimum requirements they can to improve sales for both older and newer systems
--------------------------------------------
CON: always uses controllers; games pre-configured to use specific controllers(aka joystick, gamepad, etc.)

PCS: different controllers supported by different games; may or may not be pre-configured to use your controller; may require setting up
--------------------------------------------
Console gaming negatives
--------------------------------------------
CON: not internet capable(up and coming)
PC: Online gaming is everywhere
--------------------------------------------
CON: not as many games; variation not as good
PC: tons of games and variation
--------------------------------------------
CON: usually dying, obsolete technology by the time they hit the market
PC: always two steps ahead of console capabilites in performance, graphics, etc..;
not necessarily the games that make better use of the graphics but the hardware is second to none
--------------------------------------------
CON: simple to use; just buy and plug in
PC: not always simple to use; who knows what to buy unless your technically inclined; not always just plug and play; troubleshooting usually occurs at some point
--------------------------------------------
CON: relatively inexpensive except for those $50 a pop games(ouch!); tough to upgrade; too many additional accessories add to the cost

PC: more expensive; games vary in price; lower costing PC means quicker road to becoming obsolete; easier to upgrade(not technically unless your in the know); again, accessories elevate costs and headache.

I don't know...it's a start. These are some of the key differences I see. I'm sure there are more.

I can tell you this FOR SURE.

I don't care what console comes out with what power or DVD thingy, the games will never be better than PC.

The only draw back you have on PC is that the screen is smaller than your big screen tv. But, you can just by a 3dfx Voodoo card with output and run the cable right to your tv. Then, you just get a good gamepad and BOOM you are set.

I have yet to see a game on any console that rivals the graphics and sound of Unreal Tournament. Not even close. PC is just a more powerful platform since the processor is faster, the 3D imaging is faster, and the thinking is faster. Its just a fact that computers do it better. PS2 can't compete with the loaded computer monster my little brother has. That thing draws you in that you think you are actually in the freakin 3d game. Its totally awesome because the graphics are just processed better.

Still, I will get PSII just because I can't look at a computer screen. Hurts me eyes!

When I get my new PC, I'm going with NVidia GeForce2 chipset based video cards. Their the best out there. 3dfx can't even compete. But, then again....who needs to play Quake III at 100 FPS. But, when more intense games clouting huge advances in graphics hit the market, the GeForce2 cards will be able and waiting. The 3dfx card will be sputtering out of the starting gate [IMG].

I dont know Almu they are making video games very advanced nowadays , Basically the playstation is just a CD ROM with RAM , same as a computer but without the huge Megahertz power , with 1 gigahertz of power in a game you can play really fast ,powerful . The shape polygon is what makes 3-D animtaion go , the more polygons per second(PPS) , the more powerful and realistic the game is ., I heard Dreamcast put out 1.5 million PPS while Sony's PSX put out around 400,000 , PSX2 will put out a whopping 3.5 million PPS , which will make the most powerful , But who knows what Sega will think of next , and with Nintendo the only power in the Game Cartridge world , the 128-bit system might be able to put up a good fight against the 3.5 million pps , I wouldn't bet on PSX2 being the most powerful thing on the market within 3 years , but what the hell it looks good now , Im buyin it for the sports games , I wanna see the space between Steve Francis' fingers while Im putting on a sweet crossover in NBA LIVE 2001 , and I dont want to see some white thing coming out of his upper lip thats supposed to be his teeth . Man I'm really into into this

Long time lurker, first time poster [IMG]

R0ckets03:

Check out IGNCube for the complete lowdown on Nintendo's next system, the GameCube. The various links within IGNCube have info on the system, controller, peripherals, launch date, and games in development. Also there are pictures of the system (it will come in several colors including silver and gold), the controller, and screenshots of games and demos. The site also has movies of a couple of GameCube games too (and my god do they look sweet...). The visual quality of many of the games/demos surpass PS2 IMO. Nintendo unveiled the GameCube at Spaceworld a few days ago, and nearly everyone was impressed. Some were even ecstatic. The price of the system hasn't yet been finalized but since Nintendo is adamant about affordability to the consumers I expect a retail price of about $200. This system has me extremely excited [IMG] and I'm gonna preorder one once retailers begin accepting them sometime next year.

Consoles may become easier to upgrade in this upcoming generation. There is a hard drive add-on in the works for PS2. One of the Nintendo GameCube accessories is a 64MB San Disk Digicard adapter, which will allow for a multitude of possibilities such as writability. I'm not sure about Microsoft's upcoming console, the X-Box; I guess they'll go the hard drive route also.

Another advantage that console has over PC is that console games are generally less buggy than PC games.

Almu, although I'm not really into PC games (I prefer console) I agree that PC beats console in the graphics department, and may continue to do so. However I think that these next-gen consoles will close the gap.

I predict GeForce2 cards will be ancient technology within 1 year. LOL! [IMG]

Has it been a year since the TNT2 Ultras came out? Hell, they're ancient technology now. There's no point in trying to buy video or pc equipment in general in the hopes of being cutting edge for more than 6 months. It's not possible. That being said, I may go for the GeForce 2 GTS - based card if the 2D rendering is acceptable. I have a VooDoo3 3000 in one of my current machines and well... it's doing everything quite nicely. A year...I give them 2 months [IMG]. Believe it or not...NVIDIA is already working with Intel on the AGP 8X. What does this mean? Try 533 Mghz pumping those graphics...twice as fast as AGP 4X. The 32 bit bus cap is still in place, though. Just think of the games we will have....they will blow current games away.

I believe GeForce2 GTS pumps out 25 million polygons per second. The Ultra version pumps out even more than that at 31 million. Compare that to your gaming consoles. The new Detonator drivers are all the rage from what I hear. Impressive performance gains are made in existing cards...both old and new.

GeForce2 Ultra is what I am thinking....the latest and greatest. But, by the time I buy a PC, it will be old news. I don't know though....the PC front has got a stranglehold on me. AMD Duron is the best bang for the buck...it's not even close. You can overclock 'em to 900 Mghz if you got balls and a soldering iron ready to void the warranty on your ASUS A7V motherboard [IMG].

I can't wait....oh, by the way, check out NVidia for more details. Using a DTV tuner, you can stream HDTV signals on to your PC in all formats/resolutions. Impressive. Technology....gotta love it.

Kinda like how UDMA-66 hard drives are being advertised to death when most drives barely ever even BURST to 40-50 MB data transfers much less 66 MB. Oh and what's this? They're bringing out UDMA-100 motherboards/controllers... cool! Now I can get even newer technology that no hard drive will be able to use. [IMG]

Ok, so I'm a bit sarcastic and of course AGP 8x will make a difference (unlike AGP 1x which was mostly a marketing ploy by Intel than anything). I just take some of the stuff coming out with a grain of salt now that I'm older and umm... well, almost wiser.

Oh and then there's RAMBUS RAM... pay a truckload more for memory without much of a performance boost. Come and get it!!!

You can get an AMD Thunderbird 700 and the ABIT KT7 RAID mobo, overclock it to about 900 MHz, plus get the added benefit of having RAID 0 for faster HD access. The A7V would probably be my 2nd choice. The one thing I hate about the A7V is that if you're overclocking, it doesn't allow you to change clock multipliers without flipping dip switches. This from a supposedly "JumperFree" setup. You also can't go beyond 1.85v on the core voltage. If you're into every possible tweak in overclocking, the KT7 RAID may be a better choice. Of course, it's also a bit more expensive, but hey... I'm not much for overclocking, so I'll just stick with the AMD Thunderbird 800 MHz I'm about to order for the time being. Unless they bring out a Duron 800 by that time, then I may have to reconsider. [IMG]
