Never really sat down and thought about this, but my iPod randomly played T-Rex' "Rip Off" last night and I think DMB could do a killer cover of that song. So much so, I thought I'd start a thread.
I heard "Devil Inside" the other day and thought about the same thing. Someone should turn the volume up on that one. I assumed Manson or someone like that. That song is great, btw.
I would like to see one of those death metal bands cover "I'm Henry the VIIIth I am" by Herman's Hermits. It has to be one of those bands with a singer who sounds like cookie monster.
Epic - Faith No More She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses Wavelength - Van Morrison
No way for "She sells Sanctuary", Mr. Ramirez, sir. That song sounds kick-ass already on my Gran Turismo 3. What is the obsession with "remakes"? Why can't peeps leave the originals alone? Which brings me to the following question: "Who was the first brainless singer who thought about singing a song someone else sang?" I'm thinking Nat King Cole or Ritchie Valens.
They already contributed to the soundtrack, but it would be badass to see Mogwai perform some pieces from "The Fountain" soundtrack along with Kronos. I just really want to hear it live. It would be the greatest thing ever. Btw, new Mogwai album is due out in mid-September. This is the only album I've been excited about in a long time.
I would have liked to hear the Ramones do a cover of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, but unfortunately the time has passed for that....
I don't know if this counts, but: Elvis Presley's Greatest Hits Screwed And Chopped By Michael "5000" Watts
I don't know who should do it, but I've always thought that "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" would make a great modern rock song.
Funny topic -- my guitar player and I were trying to think of a gimmicky cover to play to appeal to casual listeners. It's not that we don't play covers, but the typical Israeli doesn't know Jimmy Reed, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt or any Rolling Stones songs other than top ten hits. And you can forget alt-country, even Ryan Adams or the Old 97's. So I hope more people contribute to the thread...I may steal an idea. Anyway, In a week of mulling it over...this is as far as we got: I came to the conclusion that the trick to doing a good cover is to try and add something new to it, without trying to hard. Too serious and too hard to re-interpret and it's "campfire." Not serious enough and its just plain camp, and you also want to try something that hasn't been overdone. Then there's the whole idea of appealing to a younger audience that may not know the original. Beatles? Dylan? Zepplin? Too tired. No prog rock, we agree. No 90's rock unless its an obscure Belle and Sebastian or Ben Harper song. I opted for a non-Hotel California Eagles song, but Babush was dead set against it, citing the "Israelis only know hits if its classic rock other than Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, or Led Zepplin." What about a tribute to Bo Diddley? Who Do You Love? Roadrunner? "Not unless you invest in a Gretsch and some serious hardware", he shoots back. I can't tell you how many freaking stupid kids I've seen playing "Easy" at open mic nights and don't know who Lionel Richie is. Something about Mike Patton really rubs me the wrong way. Which is why I veoted any effort to cover Faith No More or Mr. Bungle. Anyway...my guitarist wants to do "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. I wanted to do "Love Cats" by the Cure but that was after exhausting more songs from more different genres than a Manny Ramirez thread. My second thought was "Wild Thing" by the Trogs...but I doubt I'd outdo Jimi hendrix' version. Third try was "Rock Lobster" by the b-52's until I realized how bizarre and impossible the tuning of the guitar needs to be to sound right. I did a crude recording of Little Red Rooster. I was happy with it, and sent it to him. He replied "The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Stones did it a long time ago...and a whole lot better." I may try Chuck Barry's Ding-A-Ling Song next.
i don't care what song is covered as long as michael hung is doing the covering....dat fool gots talenf!
Just a few off the top of my head Foo Fighters - Everlong Weezer - My Name is Jonas Blink 182 - What's My Age Again
Hey, david_rocket, don't you just hate the fact that we're running out of SPANISH WORDS? When reporters and talk-show hosts and singers refer to a singer doing a "cover", they don't say the word in Spanish. WTF is wrong...? "Haciendo un cover" in YouTube yields many results. I hate that we're losing our language.
Yep, but I dont think a word in spanish for that type of songs. But in the other hand, they are a lot of words in spanish in english, like "margarita, tacos, enchiladas, and more. But yep, the spanish language is losing words, its a shame.
i heard a pretty good edgy cover of George Michael's "Never gonna dance again". I think it'd make a damn awesome ska/punk song, even if I'm not that into the scene anymore.
