I'm sure Batman Jones will chime in with several Bob Dylan songs... but, absolutely on the top of my list is Hey Jude. Last night, st pats day, the Gingerman had a Beatles cover band. I had just told my buddie my cover theory about Hey Jude. Not only did they cover Hey Jude but they said before hand to get you lighters out. Not only did they cover Hey Jude and told us to get our lighters out, but during the "Na na" part they had the girls sing it separately then said "Guy, you can do better than that." it was so sad! I was so sad.
He stopped loving her today. Ring of Fire Nobody else should cover Wasted Days and Wasted Nights after Freddie Fender covered it. R.I.P Freddie Fender Same Goes for Blue Moon Of Kentucky after Elvis's version. Nobody Should ever attempt Muleskinner Blues but Bill Monroe with respect to Jimmy Rodgers. I will always love you by Dolly Parton.
Backstreet's Back (and every other boy band song) mostly because that would involve those songs being performed, and that is never a good thing.
i love cover songs. the only songs that shouldn't be covered are bad songs. wait, scratch that. it is imperative that all songs be covered.
You know, thinking of unusual but great covers by artist, how about Joey Ramone's version of What a wonderful World. A totally different version of the classic Louise Armstrong song. That surprised me.
I like to hear other musicians' takes on classic songs. If they suck, no one is going to force me to listen to them again.
did I ever tell you that I want your moniker? what? Hobbs, yes, Bohemian Rhapsody is surely on the top of my list, as well. We are allowed multiple #1's, right? what
the best songs of history are covers? what about the most precious goddess of all time...Billie Holiday what
No, all covers are not created equal. Depends on the Artist. Emmylou Harris or Ricky Skaggs wouldn't even have a career were it not for covers.
The example here IS a cover band (at a bar?) We pretty much know they commit probably the worst offenses to music and can count on them coming through with some duds. And overlooking the covered song, that band's performance you describe appears really awful. Excellent thread topic. Could go on for days about this like I'm writing an essay topic on it...Would agree Social Distortion covered "Ring of Fire" well and I'm not a Social D fan. Was about to throw something at the radio when I heard an R&B version of Bohemian Rhapsody years back. Bad bad bad...
reminds me...isn't my favorite Willie Nelson song "Blue Skies" a cover? Makes me wonder how many of my favorite Neil Young songs are covers.
you're right. Yes, bar bands doing covers generally always suck. And this version was especially sucks. but can you ever name a band who has ever attempted "Hey Jude." much less succeeded. I can't what
The older you get the more you are aware of stuff like that. I remember back in the day listening to this great song by Posion. Way back in the day, that is. It was Black Dog. Oh the shame on my face.
Don't know if this flow your boat, I'm partial to this cover: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ehgLetsutJI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ehgLetsutJI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
