This was banned by Disney as depicting life on the plantation in too good a light. Is this a case of too much Political Correctness, or do you feel that it is the right thing to do? For me, I remember my parents taking me to the movie theater and singing along with Uncle Remus. I have not seen the movie in 30 years, but am thinking of ordering a DVD from China so that I can have it in my collection. Does anyone else remember this movie? Also, I would be very interested in hearing what the African American sentiment is on it. Thanks, DaDakota - Zippity Doo Da...Zippity Day !!
I watched this movie when I was a kid. I remember really liking it. I don't remember anything specific about it, though.
is this the movie with "de lawd" in it? i never saw the whole thing, but i thought it was on pbs a year or so ago.
I love the movie, as well. I think they should release it. It is entirely too much political correctness. I think the context of it is so far removed from reality that it wouldn't be offensive. It might be good to add on a disclaimer at the beginning, and a PSA at the end that might educate about civil rights, or interest children in learning more about that. It should be released.
totally. i remember loving it as a kid. one of my fraternity brothers has the DVD. it's definitely some sort of imported bootleg.
All I know is that when I went to Disney World in 98 I rode that one over and over and I wasn't offended, they can have a ride but no movie out?
'Song of the South' was based on the "Uncle Remus" stories, which were related by a black man to a white boy. Bre'r RAbbit was supposed to represent how the sly black man was able to overcome the oppression of the "white" Bre'r Bear and Bre'r Fox. Som of the imagery seems racist now, but it was told by a black man. So unless the white boy made this all up, I have a hard time justifying the film as racist. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a DVD release maybe have a little bit of history included so that children can understand what is now inappropriate.
great movie. great music. what are they going to ban next? aladdin? unfair representation of the underclass in a persian bazaar? beauty and the beast? unfair representation of indentured servitude under a canine prince?
After reading that link it seems that it is a self imposed Disney ban. I wonder if they will ever release it? I know that Roy Disney is wanting to take over from Eisner...I would not mind that happening. DD
Roy Disney taking over would be wonderful for the company. Walt had a vision for the company and for the theme parks. Since his death, they have strayed significantly from that vision. Roy Disney wants to see Walt's vision brought to reality.
My wife will sometimes drop: "Zippadee doo dah, zippadee ay My oh my, what a wonderful day Plenty of sunshine, heading my way Zippadee doo dah, zippadee ay" It brings back a lot of childhood memories. Free SOTS.
I largely agree. Eisner did have a nice run for a while, but he's gotten so far off track it's silly. Interesting tidbit: Walt's vision of EPCOT was as a literal community that had Jetson like technology. People were to live and work there with the most cutting edge technology provided by Disney. Experimental Prototypical Community of Tomorrow. It's a far cry from that...and it's being entirely remade, anyway. By the way....Splash Mountain rocks!
This was one of the best Disney movies. I remember last seeing it about 20 something years ago. FranchiseBlade hit the nail on the head about it.
Never seen it, but I don't understand why some of you guys have such a problem with it being banned. Its a children's movie. Do you guys also sit around watching Little Mermaid? Your frat brother owns it? Why? I think some of you guys are trying to be anti-political-correctness for the sake of it. If Disney's embarrassed by it so be it.
