He was vastly under paid his whole career. Here is bball reference's salaries for him: Season Team Lg Salary 1984-85 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $307,000 1985-86 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $437,500 1986-87 Philadelphia 76ers NBA *$630,000 1987-88 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $822,500 1988-89 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $1,536,000 1989-90 Philadelphia 76ers NBA *$2,218,000 1990-91 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $2,900,000 1991-92 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $3,200,000 1992-93 Phoenix Suns NBA $2,420,000 1993-94 Phoenix Suns NBA $3,250,000 1994-95 Phoenix Suns NBA $4,030,000 1995-96 Phoenix Suns NBA $4,760,000 1996-97 Houston Rockets NBA $4,695,000 1997-98 Houston Rockets NBA $2,250,000 1998-99 Houston Rockets NBA $1,000,000 1999-00 Houston Rockets NBA $9,000,000 Career (may be incomplete) $43,456,000 Now compare that to Hakeem who came out in the same year so he is a good reference for what people made at the time. Season Team Lg Salary 1984-85 Houston Rockets NBA $780,000 1985-86 Houston Rockets NBA $882,500 1986-87 Houston Rockets NBA *$1,167,583 1987-88 Houston Rockets NBA $1,452,666 1988-89 Houston Rockets NBA $1,677,666 1989-90 Houston Rockets NBA *$2,426,333 1990-91 Houston Rockets NBA $3,175,000 1991-92 Houston Rockets NBA $3,170,000 1992-93 Houston Rockets NBA $3,170,000 1993-94 Houston Rockets NBA $3,170,000 1994-95 Houston Rockets NBA $3,169,900 1995-96 Houston Rockets NBA $5,305,000 1996-97 Houston Rockets NBA $9,655,000 1997-98 Houston Rockets NBA $11,156,000 1998-99 Houston Rockets NBA $12,943,000 1999-00 Houston Rockets NBA $14,302,001 2000-01 Houston Rockets NBA $16,700,000 2001-02 Toronto Raptors NBA $5,061,539 Career (may be incomplete) $99,364,188 If you adjust and take out Hakeem's last two years that Barkley didn't play you get roughly 43 mil - 77 mil. Now we can argue all day on who was the better player but I think everyone can agree the two were the best at their position for quite a few years in there and both were MVP candidates most years. Heck even Stockton who was drafted that year but way down at 16 made as much as Barkley even though he made a collective 1.1 mil in his first five seasons with the Jazz. Here's Stockton's breakdown: Season Team Lg Salary 1984-85 Utah Jazz NBA $125,000 1985-86 Utah Jazz NBA $150,000 1986-87 Utah Jazz NBA *$214,000 1987-88 Utah Jazz NBA $278,000 1988-89 Utah Jazz NBA $300,000 1989-90 Utah Jazz NBA *$1,150,000 1990-91 Utah Jazz NBA $2,000,000 1991-92 Utah Jazz NBA $2,100,000 1992-93 Utah Jazz NBA $2,200,000 1993-94 Utah Jazz NBA $2,400,000 1994-95 Utah Jazz NBA $2,600,000 1995-96 Utah Jazz NBA $2,800,000 1996-97 Utah Jazz NBA $6,000,000 1997-98 Utah Jazz NBA $5,000,000 1998-99 Utah Jazz NBA $4,000,000 1999-00 Utah Jazz NBA $11,000,000 2000-01 Utah Jazz NBA $11,000,000 2001-02 Utah Jazz NBA $7,000,000 2002-03 Utah Jazz NBA $7,875,000 Career (may be incomplete) $68,192,000 He made roughly 43 mil after taking off the final three seasons he played and Barkley didn't. Wht it comes down to is late in his career when salaries sky rocketed Barkley took pay cuts to try and win a championship. In other words when he played with the Rockets he was being paid less than what he could have gotten and he did it while Hakeem made quite a bit more than him. I don't remember this ever being covered back then and I never heard Barkley complain.
And now for the real kicker ... Jordan. As many know he also came out in the fabled 84 class. What some and I would think what most don't know is he made lass then Hakeem in his career as well. Here's Jordan's: Season Team Lg Salary 1984-85 Chicago Bulls NBA $550,000 1985-86 Chicago Bulls NBA $630,000 1986-87 Chicago Bulls NBA *$737,500 1987-88 Chicago Bulls NBA $845,000 1988-89 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,000,000 1989-90 Chicago Bulls NBA *$2,250,000 1990-91 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,500,000 1991-92 Chicago Bulls NBA $3,250,000 1992-93 Chicago Bulls NBA $4,000,000 1993-94 Chicago Bulls NBA $4,000,000 1994-95 Chicago Bulls NBA $3,850,000 1995-96 Chicago Bulls NBA $3,850,000 1996-97 Chicago Bulls NBA $30,140,000 1997-98 Chicago Bulls NBA $33,140,000 2001-02 Washington Wizards NBA $1,000,000 2002-03 Washington Wizards NBA $1,030,000 Career (may be incomplete) $93,772,500 Amazing considering Jordan made 63 mil of it in his final two seasons with the Bulls. Something tells me though he was quite a bit more money than anyone in this thread.
Now what I find truly funny yet aggravating (and I just realized it which is why I'm posting again already) is that when Hakeem, Barkley, and Jordan were winning MVP's and dominating the league they were making less than top drafted rookies do now.
Haha, yeah. But those dollars were worth much more back then. I heard in the news that the dollar has devalued 12% in the past two months. Anyways, it's amazing Jordan made so much in his last two years with the Bulls.
that one year, Chuck sacrificed his check for the sake of the Rockets getting Pippen. That one act of team first unselfishness is still #1 in my book. I mean you can easily measure it.. Pippen got 11 million.
MJ made all his money in endorsements.. maybe he took paycuts so he didn't have to be surrounded by scrubs? Seems like a good plan to me anyways.
Nevermind Jordan being the big kicker it's his coat tail boy Pippen. Season Team Lg Salary 1987-88 Chicago Bulls NBA $725,000 1988-89 Chicago Bulls NBA $575,000 1989-90 Chicago Bulls NBA *$670,000 1990-91 Chicago Bulls NBA $765,000 1991-92 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,770,000 1992-93 Chicago Bulls NBA $3,425,000 1993-94 Chicago Bulls NBA $3,075,000 1994-95 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,225,000 1995-96 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,925,000 1996-97 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,250,000 1997-98 Chicago Bulls NBA $2,775,000 1998-99 Houston Rockets NBA $11,000,000 1999-00 Portland Trail Blazers NBA $14,795,642 2000-01 Portland Trail Blazers NBA $13,750,000 2001-02 Portland Trail Blazers NBA $18,083,564 2002-03 Portland Trail Blazers NBA $19,727,524 2003-04 Chicago Bulls NBA $4,917,000 2004-05 Chicago Bulls NBA $5,408,700 Career (may be incomplete) $109,862,430 Sub tract the years he played when Barkley didn't and he made 47,975,642. Or close to 5 mil MORE than Barkley in three LESS years
I always like him and I sincerely thought he played his fat butt out for us. And I do remember that he appreciated so much after he realized how much the rockets wanted him by giving up both Horry and Cassell. The funny thing is that Barkley is doing OK and Pippen is broke with all the money Barkley declined to him.
Didn't Chuck have a really bad gambling problem? Or was that issue resolved before he got to the Rockets?
funny how Pippen made so much freaking money and is broke. he stinks as a NBA Analyst too. At least Charles is funny regardless of what he says about the Rockets! And Kenny > BJ Armstrong as a player and a NBA Analyst
no no that is still going by his own admission. Remember when the Pats won that first SB over the super heavily favored Rams (like this year's Giants over Pats) he was one of the few who bet on the Pats. He put like 2 mil down on them with a bookie problem was it was like 45-1 odds meaning he was owed 90 mil and the bookie didn't pay. He took him to court over it but it was illegal betting so he just lost.
I don't understand why Chuck hates us so much. It seems whenever I watch him on TNT he always has something negative to say about us. When we played Dallas during the 22 win streak he "guaranteed" that we'd lose to them. Kenny had better sense and saved his reservations.
charles has lots of money. he's not an idiot. he probably invested correctly. look at magic johnson. he owns a like hundreds of starbucks coffee shops. mj is not an idiot either, neither is dream. hell none of the top 80s players are idiots with their money.
I dunno, betting on the superbowl to a crook bookie doesn't sound like the wisest of investment choices in my book. Maybe he should look into to low fee index funds.
I'm sure there are some. Isiah isn't dumb with his money but he sure is dumb with the Knicks. And I never said he was dumb for gambling he just has admitted numerous times to having problems and going on nights where he blows a few mil. Must be nice to be able to do that.
