Conservative morning talk show host Jon Matthews of KPRC 950 AM is blasting the arena nearly every day on his show from 6am to 9am.

We all need to call in to his show every day between now and election day to let him know how we feel. Their call-in number is 713-777-5772. Leave a note here when you call and let us know what happened.

If they don't let you in, call back and say you are anti-arena so they'll let you on. I've been told he cuts pro arena people off quickly because it drives him crazy to have people disagree.

By the way, don't forget to listen to a GOOD show on KPRC 950 AM in the evenings with fellow poster Matt Thomas. So, KPRC is all bad! [IMG]

Jon Matthews takes a very Libertarian view of government, and he simply does not think that private businesses like the Rockets should be subsidized by public money, especially when the owner of the Rockets is a millionaire.

Is it fair that streets in the Fifth Ward have large potholes and no lighting while public money is siphoned off to help make the Rocket's owner and certain businessmen millions?

I love the Rockets, but all you are participating in public blackmail, in my opinion.

TB3: Look, I respect your opinion but that is better discussed in a different forum, not here.

As for Matthews, my father used to work with the guy years ago and he wasn't the nicest guy in the world then either.

For him, it goes far beyond his Libertarian ideals. Like I said, this is the wrong forum for discussing those issues though.

What do you expect from KPRC? It is a radio station that appeals to those who are incapable of thinking for themselves.

    Jeff,

I knew someone from KPRC visited this site and now I know who it is. Thanks.

    Smeg,

Got to http://www.dialpad.com You can call any number in the USA for free, from your computer, so you can make all the calls you want to talk radio in Houston [IMG]. Alternatively, you can download the latest version of Yahoo Messenger and it has a similar deal.

I always love the "When in doubt, insult them" approach. Classy, Rocketman Tex.

By the way, I thought this whole thread was in the wrong forum. [IMG]

Does Roger Gray (sp?) still come on after Jon Matthews on 950? I used to listen to him sometimes. I didn't always agree with him, but he was a pretty reasonable person. He didn't seem to toe the party line of any group.

This thread is in the wrong forum but I needed to get everyone's attention on this one.

I certainly appreciate everyone's point of view and believe Mr. Matthews has every right to express his own. I just think we need some representation there.

I'm not in doubt about anything, my friend. KPRC is a joke of a radio station. Anything slightly to the left of Pat Robertson is immediately tagged "Liberal" and ridiculed. KPRC isn't worth the bandwidth it wastes, and Dan Patrick should be strung up by whatever short-n-curlies he happens to have left.

    Any questions, Traj?

Isn't Dan Patrick gone? I thought he got a job with a TV station and left KPRC.

As for Jon Matthews, I listened to a little of his arena bashing this morning and Jeff's right... his whole position seems to be that this is corporate welfare and we shouldn't stand for it. I think he needs to have some callers push him to explain how this is different than any other kind of incentives our government offers businesses to get them to move/stay here (apart from the publicity this one gets).

There was a funny moment this morning when a caller suggested that we need to vote against the arena because he's late getting to work downtown because of all this madness. I guess he's talking about downtown revitalization when he says "madness". Jon says "good point" to this?! If that's all they got... jeez, they're really stretching. This new arena is going to make me late for work, waaaaaa! [IMG]

I mentioned this before but when the big Eckels "torpedo" against the arena came out a few months ago Matthews was saying "oh, what a beautiful day...blah, blah, blah..". I can't wait to call back next Wednesday and let him really know what a beautiful day it is (hopefully).

One question: How is the seventh grade?

I'm not a great fan of 950 either (and I'm pretty conservative). But your shallow attacks are right on par with the shallow attacks of someone like Jon Matthews. I find that ironic.

I was just kidding Jeff. I understand why you posted it here, and why you would want to keep it to the topic at hand. Sorry I haven't done that. [IMG]

Another illogical argument. You should go play "shoot the messenger" elsewhere.

BTW, I get my news from MANY different sources- both liberal and conservative. Labeling people only makes you look ignorant. Your generalization about people who listen to a radio station represents the exact same type of logic that allows for racism. Think about it.

I'm very happy that you get your news from many different sources. I hope one of them is NPR. The only point I'm trying to make is that KPRC radio is a bastion of right-wing blowhards. All you have to do is listen to KPRC and you'll understand. If you felt like I was generalizing with you or labelling you, then I apologize. I will try to choose my words better next time.

This whole thing does remind me of an anecdote. One person I know who is definitely quite far to the left of Pat Buchanan listens to KPRC regularly. When he told me, I freaked. "How can you stand to listen to that garbage?", I asked. His reply?

Your friend is very smart. His reasoning is why I DO listen to NPR on occasion. I also read salon.com, the New York Times, and never miss one of Louis Farrakhan's speeches.

In the end, we all want the same things out of life. Our politicians, in their lust for power, exaggerate our differences in a transparent effort to conquer us.

The stadium issue is a perfect example. Everybody in town would love a new stadium in which to showcase the Rockets. We have all sorts of biased sources to inform us who are the good guys and the bad guys. These biased sources include the media who need more pro sport teams here, our Mayor who has contracts to award, business people who stand to make millions, and the Rockets who are trying to maximize their profit.

These powerful political and economic forces need us citizens to become emotional to sway our opinions. They know that intelligent, intellectual conversation on the subject will only push us toward a fair compromise. In the world of high-level intimidation, the stakes are too high to ever have "fairness" enter the equation.

In the end, we citizens can only protect ourselves by our determination to treat each other in a respectful and neighborly fashion. When we let powerful forces divide us, we don't stand a chance at finding truth.

In the end, I respect the argument that our city profits from the Rocket's presence. Unfortunately, when I see 5th Ward streets with large potholes and no lighting, I completely reject ANY tax dollars commited to help Les Alexander make millions. Couple this fact with overt blackmail attempt by the Rockets when they threaten to relocate, and I am inclined to tell Les Alexander to "hit the road".

Enough arguing over KPRC. Take that someplace else. I just want people to call in. Thank you!
