I'm on vacation with my family in Thailand and my daughter got sick. It turns out her allergies caused an ear infection. I took her to the hospital at 8 pm yesterday and we were out of there in about 20 minutes with with a bottle of zyrtec, antibiotics, and some decongestant. My bill was a whopping 800 baht which is equivalant to about 20 bucks. 20 dollars barely covers my copay in the US and it covered everything here including the medicine. Let me emphasize I was in and out in 20 minutes or so.

Something is seriously screwed up with our medical system when I can get a superior experience in a third world country for the cost of few drinks at Starbucks.

Bottom line: is your daughter OK? I'd just be grateful, man. Hopefully the $20 in 800 baht doesn't make you spend $200 in 8000 baht later. I know you didn't complain about the Thai system, but I see your point. I think insurance companies DO control most of the hospital stuff... the +20 minutes spent at the hospital could be blamed on all the red tape you must go through to get stuff cleared with everyone... which I agree is a joke. :(

NPR is starting a month long segment on the US health system.

They started by mentioning that Americans spend 2 trillion per year on health care.

    $2,000,000,000,000.00

That's over 15% of the GDP. Absolutely nuts.

Which is why my wife and I decided to get an apartment in Ajijic Mexico (south of Guadalajara) this year to eventually move there in a few years. Initially we thought we wait on the move until we're ready to retire, but sheeesh, when you compare the medical costs in both places...no comparison. Mexico wins hands down.

no, it's not. has next to nothing to do with it. tort reform has swept the nation. the district courts in harris county are so empty, they're talking about dissolving a couple of them and/or moving family dockets from the overcrowded family courts to them. are you paying less for medical care yet?? i saw data leading into the introduction of House Bill 4 here in TX where the insurance companies themselves were factoring in litigation as about 1% of the total cost of healtcare in this country.

I've taken my daughter to the doctor many times and the level of service and expertise I recieved here in Thailand is every bit as good if not better. I'm not saying the level of expertise for cancer or brain surgery is the same but for simple stuff, our pediatrician doesn't spend more than five minutes with us but somehow I always spend more than an hour at the office. I even spent 5 hours in an emergency room one time so my daughter good get a dose of benedryl. The doctor spent about 10 minutes with us tops and the rest of the time was us just waiting.

If you ever spent time in at the doctors or the hospital just waiting and you think to yourself, there has to be a better way. Well there is and my experience here proves it.

Agree w/ MadMax. Very little to do with it.

Doctors play it up because it's an annoying part of their jobs. Healthcare companies play it up because the settlements could be large. They both blow it out of proportion.

and now with tort reform, damages are so capped it's not even a blip on the radar. meanwhile, health care costs keep rising.

i love how it costs at least $80 to see my doctor w/o insurance. and you're right. the wait is usually 20 minutes, with appointment, another 10 waiting in the actually room, and he sits down for 5 minutes, gives a prescription and off you go.

actually, i know little about the process i admit. but when you hear about malpractice suits all the time and how the costs for doctors increase, it is understandable that the increase is passed on to patients. all i know is, w/o my insurance, i'd rather almost cough up a lung than go to the doctors office.

And now that everyone bought that piece of Republican garbage, the healthcare industry has much less to worry about when they kill someone (and hundreds of thousands die each year from the system).

A lifelong Republican (small government), I despised the Republican agenda under Bush.

I figure with the hold that insurance and healthcare companies have, we will never see national healthcare coverage and that is a shame.
