whenever it's lunch time, all the asian folks in our department are always in the office, with our own lunches. everyone else goes out to eat. just thought i'd promote some stereotypes.
Bingo.... Me and my wife bring food for lunch everyday we have estimated it saves us about $250-300 dollars a month. Man thats $3k - $3.6 K a year
Seriously though why is that when you see non-asians at the asian restaurants you see them ordering the same sh$t like General Tso's or Sweet and Sour chicken? I mean there is like 98% of the other side of the menu they are missing.. Sorry just my Sterotyping too hehe
But see, out of my disposable income I set aside about 4,000 a year just to eat out. Eating out makes me happy. Think about it, you're going to eat no matter what. I noticed if you're single it's not that feasible to stock up with groceries and do cooking. It's not even funny how much food I have to throw away each month because it's expired. I find it easier just to eat out. I used to spend about 12-15 bucks per meal but now only spend maybe 5 or 6 a day. That's really not that bad I guess.
I dispute your figures! I'm assuming 22 work days in each month. Each of you saves $125/month. $125/22 days = $5.68 / day. Assuming the average lunch out costs between $6 or $7, I have to ask what you and your wife are bringing for lunch? A pack of Ramen Noodles? Frankly, I've tried the bringing work to lunch thing and it just depresses me. I like to get out around the middle of the day to just get out of the office, eat a nice lunch, and then work another 4 hours. I find when I'm at work 8 hours straight and eat a bland lunch at my desk there just isn't much to look forward to from 8 to 5 on weekdays. My figures were closer to about $65 or $70 per month that I lose going out. And for me it's totally worth it.
This is just one more reason I'm glad I moved so close to the new job. I go home for lunch just about every day. I get to eat hot food and save money at the same time.
I'll use 20 work days just to make it simple for ya. $250 / 20 work days = $12.5 a day Now that is for two people Like you said $6-7 is the average meal. So yes me and my wife save $250-300 a month just on LUNCH.
I once calculated the cost of making my own Roast Beef sandwich every day for a week vs. getting a Roast Beef sandwich at Subway. It ended up being $4 cheaper for the week to make my own. But that meant I was locked in to a Roast Beef sandwich every day, instead of mixing it up a little if I went to Subway. So eating at home doesn't always save as much as you think. I know for a fact it's more expensive to make my kids' lunches than to let them buy at school (although the food they bring is much better than school food.)
Still don't get it. The problem I had is that according to my calculations you and your wife's lunch must only cost on average 82 cents per day for you and your wife to get monthly savings of $250...much less $300. This begs the question...what are you bringing for lunch each day that costs roughly a dollar or less?
If their food smells as bad as some of the food I see India folks toting around here at the office, then I could see that.
I don't get it guys? DCKid this if for you too... Now if your single that is an entirely different subject but do you allways cook for just that small of a meal? For instance last night I got the old crockpot out and put some meat, potatoes, carrots, peas, corn, and seasoning and let it on overnight. Now that is alot of food.. Since I'm asian ( obviously ) we have cooked rice everyday. That one Crockpot dish can feed me,my wife, 3 kids and a couple of friends for 2 lunches and an evening meal. granted you have to change it up a bit because you don't want the same crap over and over again but when we cook we cook not just for 1 meal but let's say for an evening and next day lunch. There is tremendous savings in that.
Okay, makes more sense now. Buying/cooking in bulk can help save a lot of money, especially if you bring the leftovers for lunch. Still, not something I could do. I'm too American in my eating habits.
hell, i'm single and i still make enough for left overs. i buy frozen chicken and fish packs which are are like 5 bucks for 24 oz. that'll feed me for about a week. of course i love my rice too so that'll fill me up for lunch. a 25 lbs of rice lasts me forever.
