Robinson High Coach DePue Feels Wrath Of Sapp

TAMPA - Mike DePue has been a high school football coach for nearly a quarter of a century, a Bucs season-ticket holder for more than 20 years and, until a recent run-in with the six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, a fan of Warren Sapp.
An invited guest of the Bucs as their high school Coach of the Week, DePue says he found himself the object of verbal abuse from Sapp at a recent Tampa Bay practice. Afterward, DePue wrote a letter to Bucs General Manager Rich McKay and Coach Jon Gruden thanking them for their hospitality and the award - which includes a $1,000 donation to Robinson's football program - but notifying them of the altercation with Sapp.

According to DePue, he and two of his assistants, Rob Burns and Vaughn Volpi, were at One Buc Place viewing practice from the sideline when Sapp walked to an area near them and ``threw a tantrum,'' apparently for DePue making eye contact with Sapp.

``I was just looking around in practice and he [Sapp] said to me in a confrontational tone, `Do you see what you're looking for?' '' DePue said.

And as Sapp walked back toward practice, DePue said Sapp used foul language and said he would ``give me more [verbal] grief if I looked at him again.''

DePue's initial reaction to Sapp's outburst was one of shock. He says that being a coach, he knows proper etiquette and protocol during practice. From where he and his assistants were standing, DePue believes he didn't invade any player's ``personal space.'' In fact, defensive end Simeon Rice and Gruden made it a point to greet them during practice, DePue said.

But after the confrontation with Sapp, DePue says the experience at One Buc Place has been soured.

``It just left a bad taste in our mouths,'' DePue said. ``We were invited guests and it was totally uncalled for. But bottom line, I've got much more important things going on in my life than worrying about Warren Sapp giving me a hard time.''

The Bucs declined comment on the matter and said Sapp was unavailable.

As long as Saap continues to be one of the best defensive lineman in the game, then he will continue to act like an ass and get away with it.

has Saap always been an ass? I don't recall too many incidents but since last years incident when he almost ruined that guys career and challenged GB's coach to put on a jersey, he's been in the news alot.

What a friggin' jerk. The sad thing about it is that Sapp is a truly talented player, but his constant childish antics and total lack of sportsmanship has totally lowered him in my eyes to the status of a team cancer. It is almost as if he is putting his own need and desire for attention above the needs he needs to fulfill on the football field. As a result, his performance has severely suffered and I imagine that the rest of the Bucs are embarassed by him.

It's sad because besides him and uber-jerk Keyshawn, I like the rest of their team. They are all a bunch of blue-collar workers who while not the flashiest guys, get the job done. If I'm the Bucs, I let his overrated ass walk next year and find someone who has less mouth, but more game.

It could be that the Bucs are down because they are only at .500 and are riddled with injuries. Sapp is probably just a little depressed since they have lost a couple key contributors for the season. This is just misdirected anger.

I think poor Warren is starting to wonder about all those dreams
he has about naked men playing leapfrog. The male eye contact
is taking his unconscious to uncomfortable territory.

Yes. That was the knock on him when he came into the NFL. I beleive that is why the Vikings passed on him in the draft. Coincidentally, the rumor is that the guy who wanted the Vikes to pass on him most was Tony Dungy who would then become the Bucs head coach a year later.

I swear, if I ever saw Sapp on the street I would spit on him. I don't like his antics especially what happened last year when he blindsided the ?Green Bay:confused: Lineman?.

He didn't even apologize for that stunt and thinks he can get away with this crap. I'll blindside him with a Ford F150 and see what he thinks of that.

I hope the boys take care of his punkA$$ this week.

Sapp is no longer one of the best in the game unlike his teammate Simeon Rice. I'm beginning to think that all these tirades and showoffs are to make up for his lack of production on the field. Between 97 and 2000 Sapp averaged 11.5 sacks a season, the past three years he's averaged just over 3 per season. Add the fact the he is over 30 years old, the age when most NFL players began a steady decline in production, I doubt very much he can be considered one of the best DLs in the game.

Actually, I always heard that the reason why Sapp fell so far in the draft was because he had tested positive for mar1juana. You may be right that his attitude was a contributing factor, but it was more of testing positive for mar1juana than anything else.

    Sapp is an @ss.

But he is a talented @ss, so as long as he is good peopel will adjust to him. I know that's terrible to say but there are a lot of bad people in professional sports.

I would love Sapp on my Team, but you have to take the baggage as well...

The Superbowl sometimes gets to players heads and typically, they don't follow through the following year...The talent is there, but there 3-3 and haven't won a home game...It's not all Sapp's fault, but he is a distraction...

Sapp is fat and on the downward side of a brief career.
