Uhh....I think you mean DHCP if I'm not mistaken:

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) offers dynamic configuration of IP addresses and related information. DHCP provides safe, reliable, and simple TCP/IP network configuration; prevents address conflicts; and helps conserve the use of IP addresses through a centralized address collection.

Do you use this? Try going to Control Panel -> Settings -> Network -> Click on TCP/IP for your ethernet card -> Click Properties -> Select the IP Address tab.

What does it say? Please let us know.

If you have a static IP address, then you should have the "Specify an IP Address" radio button selected and a place where your IP Address number should be input. If your buddy changed the numbers, then you need to find your ISP sign-up form or call your ISP provider to find out your IP address.

If you should not have a static IP address, then you should be assigned one automatically by a DHCP server(like my cable/Internet configuration) and the "Obtain IP Address automatically" tab should be chosen.

It sounds like he may have selected the "Obtain IP address automatically" radio tab and it can't find the DHCP server(because there isn't one) because you should have a static IP address.

Oh well...try that I guess. Let us know.
