Let me say first of all that High School Football is KING in West Texas. It rules the headlines, ESPECIALLY in the Midland/Odessa area. Yes, the same Odessa that brought you the famous book Friday Night Lights. Old men sit around the barber shop and talk about the days when they scored 4 touchdowns in a single game ala Al Bundy while playing dominos.

In Midland, there is a HUGE rivalry between Lee High School and Midland High School. Lee has beat them every year since 1989 and it is almost as big a rival as the Lee-Mojo(permian) game every year. You dont understand how big High School football is here until you see the 6 million dollar state of the art 20,000 seat stadiumwith artificial turf made JUST for football. We also have a Sports Complex with a football/baseball arena that cost like 20 million dollars.

Cedric Benson went and graduated from Lee High School in Midland. Every in Midland LOVES him and is proud of him EXCEPT the people that graduated from Midland High. These people are the rich people in our city who have millions of dollars; are typically white and hate Lee High shcool.

I went and gradated from Lee high school in 1996 and I know Cedric Benson well. He is an exceptional man who respects everyone he comes into contact. Let me tell you he is scared of no one except two people: his Mother and his Grandmother. THey make sure he is walking the straight path at ALL times. As strong as he is, he is truly afraid of his grandma; who is a wonderful lady in her own right.

You have to understand how horribly he was treated in Midland by the Midland High alumnus and the death threats he received. He got horrific letters in the mail; some with threats of how they would harm him, his friends, and most importantly his sweet grandmother. He recieved threats by phone and by mail...and in a couple instances, threats in person. When they would play Midland High, he would have an outstanding game with like 325 yards and people would throw beer, hotdogs coke cans, and anthing else they could find. I watched him play one itme only to see him head in to the locker room with mustard and ketchup ALL over his white helmet.

During his football career here in Midland, he had constant complaints called in to the local newsaper as well as the police department saying how he was doing drugs or how he assaulted someones daughter or how he was driving while drunk or anything they could think of just to harm him. NONE of it could be proven and he never committed those acts because when the police demamnded proof, the caller simply hung up the phone. It was malicious and he suffered here while having possibly the greatest career anyone in high school has ever had in football.

Im not saying that he is guilty or innocent. All I'm saying is that people are out to get him here in Midland JUST because he went to a rival school and ITS SICK. It is JUST A GAME and those old people should just get over it. He has a right to live his life and football isnt a life, its a game. THe people here take it so seriously; to the point where they are willing to ruin another persons life.

I knw this happened because I live here and have seen it first hand. I know this because my uncle was one of those old men who called the cops...making the whole thing up...just so something bad would happen to Cedric Benson. I am ashamed that I even know my uncle; much less be related to him. He even disrespects me because I went to Lee High.

I will find some articles abou the troubles he has had to face from ESPN as soon as I can locate them.

they broke in the window, a lady who claimed there was loud music and the renter of the apartment doesnt own a stereo in the whole house and a purse that didnt belong to them that had ALL of the evidence. Where did this loud music come from....the purse??

There are people in this redneck town that would love to see something bad happen to this kid just because of a stupid game like football. They are jealous; simple as that.

I am white and I am not trying to say that its a racial thing. Some people in this city hate him and they don't even know him.

And he is guilty because of what? Because you are an Aggies fan? Is it because he is a Longhorn? You are no better than the racist cops who run this town.

I must have dozed off when they changed the "innocent until proven guilty" stucture of our legal system. When was that again?

I know Cedric and his gradmother said he didn't do it. Believe me she would be the first person to say he did it. She loves him with all her heart; but she would be the first to call the cops if he was guilty.

I live here in his hometown, I was maybe a mile away from where it took place. And you want to tell me that you know all about it? You're an idiot.

Too bad you have no quarterback, or I would pick UT in every game.......... Jason White'll show Chrissy Simms how it's done come October:D

Jason "I got my fame by scoring a touchdown on a fluke option drive" White is OU's new savior, PLEEASE

You will miss Roy Williams and Rocky Calmus more than you think.

ah, don't you love a rivalry like this:D

I'd take White of Simms any day, and yes we will miss Roy and Rocky, but we have also gained some impact players.....

Lehman's moving to Rocky's spot, which is Lehman's natural position. We also got the 2 best juco linebackers in the country, Jackson and Mitchell. The defense is at least as good as last year, maybe better, and the offense definitely is better. Now if White can only stay healthy long enough to beat Texas.....:p

Oh, and for that fluke comment,
    Jason White- 1-0 against UT
    Chris Simms- 0-2 against OU

How is Chris Simms 0-2 against Oklahoma? He didn't start the 2000 game and didn't enter it until it was 28-0.

It's the Sooner logic... doesn't matter who plays or who wins or loses, it all comes back to "Chrissy" Simms.

I just hope you Sooner fans are around next year after Chris wins the Heisman, and Texas blows out OU. Can't wait until next fall...

OK Cat, you just keep believing

UT blowing out OU, I can see, but there's NO WAY Chris even gets close to the Heisman.

And if that's the Sooner Logic, what's the Longhorn logic?
"we'll get'em next year"? That sure sounds familiar........

No way? Hmm... I guess that ESPN draft article was biased too, cause the last sentence essentially projected Simms as the top draft choice next season. I don't care how talented you are, you don't get talk as the top pick in an entire draft unless you produce, or are realistically expected to produce. I doubt these New York ESPN writers are UT graduates.

Anyway, my reasoning for believing in him:

UT will have the best team in the country next year. Most everyone returns from a top 5 team, including most everyone from the top ranked defense, and the offensive skill players should improve. Benson will have a year of experience. Roy Williams will finally be at 100%, after playing at nearly 70% for all of last year with bone spurs. However, because of the superficial or biased fans like yourself assuming that Simms will never improve, the majority of opposing coordinators will be focusing on stopping Cedric Benson. Texas always tries to establish the run first anyway, and with the bad rap Simms has, they'll dare him to beat them. Bad choice.

Simms had an outstanding year last year, with the exception of two games. The Colorado game was just awful... but it happens. Hell, it happened to Brett Favre, one of the best quarterbacks in football history, in the NFL playoffs. The OU game isn't a good measuring stick. Two of the interceptions were somewhat flukes... one on the Roy Williams strip play where he came through unblocked, and one on a desperation heave down 11 in the last minute. I'm not saying that outside of that he played great, but consider the facts. Mack never used Cedric in that game, and by the second half, Texas was going five wide receivers on almost an every down basis. They never had the threat of a running game at all, and against one of the best defenses in a long while, that's terrible.

Simms may not be the MVP of the team-- that honor will likely go to Benson. However, if the Horns are as good as I think they'll be, they'll have a top Heisman candidate on the team. Considering the focus of opposing defenses, I think it's more likely that Chris will have the statistics to win it than Cedric. Whether you consider that right or wrong, that's the way it's always been and will be.

BTW, to say "well get'em next year", you'd have to not do anything the previous year. Last year, I was thrilled with our performance. It was our first year with a legitimate chance at a national championship (the previous year we lacked the experience), we won 11 games, and finished in the top 5 in the country. I'd say we got 'em pretty good. I didn't see OU in the top 5...

    Two things Sooner fans lack:
    A full set of teeth
    Common sense

White is not very good Duke, I have to break the truth to you now. He is loved by you guys because stoops called a fluke option drive that won you the game last year. Simms is not a bad football player, and technically he had 2 picks last year vs you. The Roy one was all Roy hitting his arm, and then the last one was a desperation hail mary.

As far as UT fans expectations, I don't understand the problem with them. We have a super talented roster and a solid coach in Mack Brown, plus I'm so sick of hearing Texas always chokes, well gee OU fans, how many people thought you guys would win the national title before the season 2 years ago?

    Answer: not many.

Duke: You really believe after losing your defensive leaders in Calmus and Williams you will be better the year after? I think I need some of what your smoking when I'm depressed. Also, I know you guys will be good, but I'm calling it fairly as I see it. No disrespect intended.

Is there a full set of teeth on that defense? RW will be tuff to replace.

UT's defense should be better. WE're replacing our LB corp with some athletes.

I don't understand this statement. When UT and OU meet, both will almost certainly be unbeaten and ranked in the Top 5. If Texas blows out Oklahoma, Chris Simms will "get close" to the Heisman thanks to the push from that game.

I don't think he will win it. Most people have impossibly high standards for him. Being that he's merely human, there's very little chance that he will be able to live up to those standards-- so he'll always be a "failure" or "flop" to a lot of people.

It's funny to me how people don't notice any inconsistency between saying Simms "sucks" and then complaining he's not living up to their expected performance standards even as he breaks the school record for touchdown passes and leads the team to the Big 12 South title. If you can play as well as Chris did last year and have people think you "suck", that's a testament to just how good they actually think you are.

That's OK. If he plays to 50 percent of what Aggies and Sooners apparently think he should be able to do, Texas will go 13-0 and win the national championship in a runaway.
