ok, here goes, i know, it is the status quo to rant purely based on speculation, and to pretend we know what is happening behind the scenes in the rockets, but lets try going on some facts, hmm? 1. fact- rudyT had planned on installing a new motion type offense before we got the first pick. we know this because there was an article in the paper. 2. fact- yao ming's late arrival killed any installation of said new offense. rudy said on his radio show, that they only had, like 5 plays from the offense down. he also said they would have to (HAVE TO) rely on old iso plays and sets from the hakeem days. 3. fact- rudy also said that he gives steve the power to call the plays based on what he sees the opposing defense is giving. but we all know that steve is really not used to playing alot with a big man. we also know that steve has been a pointguard for a few years so it is a learning process. 4. fact- steve has played the point for only 4 years . starbury, kidd, etc have been playing point damn near their whole lives. these are facts, not things i am making up, but things that have been either in the paper, or on rudyT's radio show. so basically we have been working with no real offense and we still gave it a good shot. i know, i know, some guys around here love to bash, and cry, and moan, but it is wierd that they are so consumed with hatred that they completely ignore the facts. sooo, from all this i thing we need to have alittle perspective. god forbid we relax and not overreact to this season as it is the worst travesty EVER ......'cause we know there are worse things. so, i think we will be fine with a year or two of a set core of guys and the new offense. let's try to be positive out there!
I'm getting tired of arguing over the offense. Just tell me why in 79 games they still only have the same 4 or 5 plays that you mentioned in fact 2?
well, how exactly is there time to learn new plays during the season? on the off days they do have, they try to go over tape of the next opponent, work out, and scrimmage. there just is no time during the season. rudy T explained all of this during one of his radio shows. heck, it was even posted on this board. there is just no way in hell that the offense you see out there is by design. it is peiced together on the fly. all the games we won this season was by pure talent, just imagine what could be done with a real offense in place!
Roger that. MAN. How much time? There should be plenty of time. The coaches are paid to design new plays and win. We still have the same old 5 plays. The players don't execute. They're smokin. They're suckin. I know. Francis only played 2 years of high school basketball. And only two years of college basketball. And in college...I think he was a shooting guard. SO...that is a problem. I think Francis was getting better but now it's back to normal again. He is too stubborn to change. And Mobley is still here. That makes things worse...since he is pretty egotistical. They have no experience with big men. And Rudy...well Yao is much slower and can't be like Hakeem. That old stuff won't work anymore. Rules have changed... That's why we need to get or add some more coaches who ARE experienced with big men and point guards and how to use them and all that nice stuff. Or at least get some tutors or mentors...somehow.
Here’s how I see it. I think Rudy is capable of implementing a motion offense and I that he did have a motion planned for the season. We got a glimpse of what it looks like during the preseason. I remember that first preseason game, the team was moving the ball better than it has in several seasons. However, somewhere along the season he abandoned it. Maybe he was afraid implementing it would take too long, and that it might hurt the Rockets playoff chances (Golden States head coach implemented the motion and it took FOREVER for the players to learn it). So Rudy stuck with what the players have been comfortable doing for the past 3 seasons, the ISO offense. It’s just very unfortunate that not only did we waste a full season which could have been used to implement a new offense; we didn’t even make the playoffs. I say give Rudy another season to prove himself and hopefully he will stick with the plan and implement a new offense.
Rox going back to ISO offense may have hurt their development by more than 1 year. Not only do they have to learn a new offense, they have to UN-LEARN bad habits of the ISO offense. Rox shouldve used this season to learn the motion-offense/unlearn ISO ball like GS and be ready for next year. Fans would've understood more if the Rox struggled. It's not like the Rox were going to win a championship this year anyway. Lets face it, GS has a brighter future than we do because they are so much farther on the learning curve plus they have a 1st rounder next year.
We were supposed to be rebuilding before the draft...but we got Yao and then got off to a good start...and expected too much. Suns. No one thought they would be anything. No one even knew who Amare was. They were just rebuilding...they just snuck in. Less pressure on them. Good job Pheonix. We did waste this season... We didn't really try many things with Yao either. We didn't get Boki any playing time...we were trying to win. Instead..failure. We still have hope. 3 games left. IN THE OFFSEASON...they need to practice practice practice! Especially shooting. Then they need to work on defense and how to help each other out and stuff. And then they need to learn how to run a fast break...and they need to learn at least 50 new plays. I was wondering...are preseason games on television?
wow, gater, do you know what it takes to implament a new offense in the nba? i mean, c'mon, alot of people assume alot of things, like how stubborn stevie is and how much he hates yao, and passing the ball, and..etc. but based on pure fact, rudyT SAID that he was faced with the question of working on new offense all year with a brand new big man and definately tank, or try to make the playoffs which is good experience even if they were eliminated in a first round sweep. he chose, with Les' blessings, to take a shot at playoffs. so this was not a waste, how was it a waste? we had moments of genius, and we learned some things too. i think alot of people are just dissappointed because we overachieved early in the year, and it is understandable, but major changes are not needed. a full summer of working and a training camp will do wonders, watch. the iso offense this year was not a preference, it was the last resort. and, once again, these are all things rudyT has said and what was in the paper. facts! so lets just stay positive, THANK GOD FOR BASEBALL!!
FACT STEVE FRANCIS signed a MAX CONTRACT Do I care Francis has only been playing point guard for 4 years? Listen if you signed a multi-million dollar contract you better know how to pass, dribble, shoot, and do freaking amazing things with the ball.
m-d, How many NBA teams start the season with new coaches? You don't see Golden State running an ISO offense do you? How about players traded from one team to another? Kenny Thomas hasn't learned Larry Brown's plays yet? It's "time" you faced the fact that "not enough time" has it's roots in excuse more than reality.
gater, your right, lots of teams start with new coaches, and usually tank. kenny thomas is not playing in that different a system. its pretty much one on one basketball too. also, when did musselman become coach? and did he have a new focal point that missed training camp? your arguments are interesting, but not really applicable. when a whole team has to switch the whole basis of their offense, it takes some time. but i suppose nothing will satisfy you. i have consistantly stated facts, and you counter with just an opinion. all i am saying, is that when a new offense is in, our guys all have a complete training camp, and everyone is healthy and we suck ass, then i will join you in your "tear up the team" mentality. and trepidation, stevie can only do so much, you are not being realistic at all, but perhaps you are playing? what can a quarterback do if all he has are bootleg plays? i also think it is interesting that no one cares about an honest, factfilled post that tries to stay away of bashing. i suppose it is telling that posts full of hating and bashing stick around forever. well, i am done trying to lighten up the negativity. don grahm, mos-def is also part of blackstar, check it out my friend!
At least Larry Smith uses more motion in his offense. Maybe Rudy is watching the games at home saying, "Hey, maybe my single play ISO rule book isn't that great after all?" DUH!
How about a few more facts... While other teams had the luxury of practicing with their new players and rookies during the off-season, Yao Ming first practiced with the Rockets 9 days before our first regular season game. ( http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=1074 ). On October 30th, Yao played his first game in the NBA. He was playing with teammates he had only know for 9 days. He had been in the country for only 10 days. -- droxford
Make you wonder what the contract w/China says about next years training camp. Will he miss it again?
God, I hope not. If he could spend a summer in the USA, bulking up, building plays with fellow Rockets, watching tape and learning/fixing weaknesses. Learning aggression... ... imagine what a sophomore Yao Ming would be like under those conditions! .... wow!.... -- droxford
I know what you mean. I will occasionally ciriticize players, but I never start a player-hatred thread, and I never say "trade him". I have always felt that users on this board (generally speaking) have a strong tendency to throw out copius "trade him" threads, and I've found it to be redundant and sometimes irritating. -- droxford
