I was wondering, if the rockets don't sign Mo or Shandon, could they sign Webber for the max and sign Hakeem to something besides the min. And if so, how much could they offer Hakeem? ------------------ I am an invisible man.
There are a myriad of possibilities when you consider sign and trades, renouncements, exceptions, and what the cap will be. Suffice to say that 10 different people can give you 10 different answers. Sit back and enjoy the playoff chase, and worry about this stuff in the summer. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
Behad, I am not asking about sign and trades. I just wanted to know if, as our current cap is now, without trades, if we just don't sign Mo or Shandon can we offer Hakeem more than the min. and c-webb the max, that's it. You are making my question to complicated. ------------------ I am an invisible man.
Then the answer is yes, but I don't see how that is relevant. If this is all you want to do in the summer, then who is gonna play SF? ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
Sorry Behad, I don't dreamcast. Besides, I think landing c-webb is a good summer myself. ------------------ I am an invisible man.
Mango, If you want to look at it that way Mango, Mo has the option as well, he don't have to sign with the rockets if he don't want to. Neither does c-webb or Hakeem or anybody. Geez, all I did was ask a simple question that, by my own admission, I don't know. ------------------ I am an invisible man.
That is what we are saying. There is no answer to this question because there are too many variables. I said this in my first post, yet you keep dragging this out. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
I was wondering, if the rockets don't sign Mo or Shandon, could they sign Webber for the max and sign Hakeem to something besides the min. And if so, how much could they offer Hakeem? Here's an explanation: 1. Hakeem will count at 150% of his salary ($24M) until he's resigned or renounced. 2. Assuming that the Rockets won't be much more than $10M or $11M under the cap without making any other roster moves, they'd have to renounce Hakeem in order to sign Webber. Webber would eat up any existing cap space. 3. We won't have a mid level exception next year since we'll be under the cap. 4. Once we renounce Hakeem, we lose his Bird Rights and the ability to exceed the cap to sign him. 5. Since we'd be over the cap, the best we could do is to offer Hakeem $1M which is the minimum for a 10+year veteran. 6. Of course, if we could trade some players and open up some more cap space, then whatever money Webber doesn't get, we could offer to Hakeem. Does that help? ------------------
Thank you for the information aelliott. You are the best. . ------------------ I am an invisible man.

aelliott, In the part about trading players to reduce salary, wouldn't the Rockets have to trade with teams under the cap, else they would have to take salary back in return? Wouldn't this be similar to the slash and burn that the Lakers had to do to make room for Shaq? Mango ------------------ Spring Cleaning!!! Yes, thanks aelliot. Now maybe we can continue with this season. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
aelliott, In this explaination, does that mean that if we renounce Hakeem and sign Webber, the only player we can sign to more money is Shandon via early bird? ------------------ I am an invisible man.
And Bullard, using full bird. ------------------ Maybe all the rulers are wrong. Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
In the part about trading players to reduce salary, wouldn't the Rockets have to trade with teams under the cap, else they would have to take salary back in return? Wouldn't this be similar to the slash and burn that the Lakers had to do to make room for Shaq? Mango, Yes they would need to trade players to a team with cap space. As far as "slash and burn", I guess that depends on whether or not you view trading Cato or Williams for draft picks as slash and burn. kbm & davo, Who we can sign depends on how much we need to sign Webber. Both Bullard and Anderson will be counting against the cap until they are signed or renounced. If we need that cap space to sign Webber, then we'd lose the ability to resign them to either Bird or Early-Bird deals. ------------------
aelliott, If Krause knows that the Rockets need to dump salary to do a deal, don't expect him to be benevolent. Mango ------------------ Spring Cleaning!!!
True Mango, particularly if Krause thinks he was hoodwinked by the 20-29 "pin", hehe. Unfortunately, CHI and LAC will be the only teams on draft night w/ sufficient cap space (I wonder if trade exceptions have ever been used draft night... hmmmm...) w/ which to pull Cato + pick for future pick sorts of scenarios. The bazillion other teams that will have space won't have it until the same day that Mo, Shandon and Dream could be tapping their feet w/ pen in hand. ------------------
Krause needs bodies and he needs them now. He can't give his money away to free agents. If he can get a guy that's under contract for several years and he thinks that player will help the team, I don't think he'll care if he helps another team or not. ------------------
Also worth keeping an eye on Atlanta-how much do they value Ratliff, and how happy is he with a loser? Would you make a deal with them that cost you your defensive stud/their hometown boy Shandon (sign/trade), a potentially equally skilled center, and some of those cap ogres (Walt/Los) along with some picks if it brought you even more cap and Ratliff? Krause is getting to the point where options are dwindling. There was an exceptionally large pool of talented free agents, and he basically popped up. The pool isn't as large, and the exception will likely double. No one is interested on being the next "Jordan" on a team with only about 5-6 players who should be in the NBA at all, and out of those, only Brand is a real talent. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Follow the rules or be assimilated. Shandon is underrated.
