I'm thinking about getting a new HD to reload Window and my programs. Currently, I have a 300gb HD and was planning on using that for my files, docs, ect. only. Would you guys recommend getting a 32gb SSD just for my C: Window and programs. I know is a lil pricey but was thinking about giving it a try. Any advise? or know any good deals on one?
On a desktop? Nope. Laptop? Yes, I have one and it is awesome. Besides 32GB would not be enough for my C drive. I just have a few programs on C and it is almost that.
Theyre getting cheaper. Frys had a Kingston 64gb for 99$ but it was a JMicron chip. Tigerelectronics has an OCZ 60gb Indilinx chip drive which supports TRIM for 145. Youll want a TRIM capable drive because SSDs get slower once the rewrites start piling on, and TRIM could be considered like an advanced defrag, allowing it to retain its speed. I'm considering one too, and hopefully Black Friday will bring the goods.
I think they'll become very cheap next year. Intel could possibly bring out an embedded equivalent that uses flash drive tech. If not, it'll still get cheaper.
It's going to get cheaper soon, and 32 G is probably not enough for windows, especially if you run vista. So it would be better to wait and see.
If you have a desktop, you'd be much better served getting a 10000 or 15000 RPM traditional drive. Half the price, still great performance.
True it is great for laptops, but for my desktop im running 2 x 80gb intel gen2 SSDs in RAID0, and it's possibly the biggest leap in performance compared to other components. This thing seriously just flies. Freaking photoshop opens up in less than 3 seconds. It's pricey, but to me worth every penny, cause i'll still be using these down the line for other builds. I'm also coming from 10k rpm raptors, and they can't touch these.
I would recommend a SSD for all computers, not just laptops. Regular HDD's are significantly slower (yes, even 15k RPM ones) than second generation SSD's (e.g., Intel X25-M). If you're willing to pay almost $400 for a 32gb third generation SSD (Intel X25-E), you will fly. Here's a lovely chart for you. For me, I'm trying to wait for a not-so-expensive third generation SSD with larger capacity (the current highest is 64gb for almost $700). I might get impatient though, and just buy a 128gb second generation for $350. The reason for waiting is that 32gb may not be enough down the road, especially if you install games and whatnot which tend to be very large (e.g., World of Warcraft is taking up 7GB for me). Anyone claiming that their 10k or 15k RPM drives are just as fast haven't seen new benchmarks. The only thing a typical HDD can even come close to comparing with an SSD is a sequential read. With decent fragmentation, those become fewer and far between. First generation SSD's sucked, but second generation ones are beginning to fulfill the promises of speed, and third generation (SLC) are the fastest drives ever.
This article is great, by the way, for those of you continuing to say 10k/15k RPM drives are comparable: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001304.html
