Not an entirely rigid study as far as I can tell. http://content.health.msn.com/content/article/87/99448.htm?GT1=3277 Sodas May Raise Cancer Risk Carbonated Beverages May Increase Risk of Esophageal Cancer By Charlene Laino Reviewed By Charlotte Grayson, MD on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 WebMD Medical News May 18, 2004 -- You may want to think twice before reaching for a soda. A new study suggests that carbonated soft drinks may raise the risk of cancer of the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. . . .
Translation: I'm gonna say this now, hope I'm right, and pray to whomever that I get accredited for the discovery of the link to esophageal cancer. Let's think about some of the other horrible things that pass through the esophagus.... Alcohol, fast food, and pesticide treated foods, prescription pills.... any correlation in those? Jeez. With all the crap that we expose ourselves to in this day and age, its a given that an increasing number of people will die of some kind of cancer. Now, if they want to say that GERD and esophageal cancer are associated, then I'd be more accepting of that theory. But drinking soda? It's not the only thing that we consume that would give us acid reflux... give me a break, or come up with some better evidence!
Man, I read this today and swore I would cut back on soda. I'm a soda-freakin-aholic. I don't drink alcohol. I don't drink coffee. But, soda is my damn achillies heel. It started for me being a musician who didn't drink. Most nights, it was beer or soda. You don't want to drink they water they offer at some bars. So started my damn habit!
I would say their study has circumstantial evidence. What is common in those countries that do not have esophagal cancer rates comparable to Western countries? They definitely drink alcohol, and have lots of treated foods. Their chemical exposure could be worse for some things as well.
I used to drink like 3 cokes a day for a while some time ago. I've cut it down to 1 or 2 on some days...somehow I don't think this will stop me from drinking that sweet sweet drink.
On a slightly related note, what is the benefit of drinking diet soda over regular soda? Just the zero calories versus the 150 or so one gets from regular sugar water?
Yeah that's the only benefit of drinking diet ... It still has phosphoric acid that is supposedly bad for you. I however am also addicted to soda regardless. I used to drink about 5-6 a day, but i've been cutting back lately to 2-3. Hopefully some day I'll have it down to just 1, but I hate drinking water with my meals.
Being health-conscious and having read previous threads on the BBS, to prevent cancer, you probably need to masturbate more the more soda you drink.
Well Van Gundy downs a six pack of diet Coke every gameday. Of course he'll sooner get killed by his stupid guards...err sorry, wrong forum.
