https://www.thenation.com/article/socialism-is-more-popular-than-donald-trump/ Well it turns out that the folks who dominate this forum, who go from the irrational gubmint haters, righties to the only issueless good old Joe Biden can beat Trump, so suck it up and vote for him are not necessarily in the majority. (Hey, don't get too lathered. Like Chomsky I will vote for "good ol Joe" if it is him vs The Donald.) "The numbers are in. The president is down. Socialism is up. “Trump Approval Edges Down to 42%,” read the headline from a May 17 Gallup review of its latest polling on the president’s appeal. Three days later, Gallup reported that “43% of Americans say socialism would be a good thing for the country.” " "who likes socialism. The ideology is narrowly ahead with women, 48 percent of whom say that socialism is good for the country, as opposed to 47 percent who say it’s bad. (Men go 56 percent “bad,” versus 38 percent “good.”) And the Gallup survey suggests socialism is way ahead with nonwhite Americans, 57 percent of whom say its good for the country, versus just 35 percent who label the ideology bad. >"The latest national survey from the Emerson College polling group has the nation’s best-known democratic socialist, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, beating Trump by eight points. When Trump started his campaign against socialism in February, Emerson’s polling had Sanders leading the president only narrowly: 51-49. Three months into the campaign, Trump’s support has fallen to 46 percent, while the democratic socialist has risen to 54 percent"
The appeal of "free stuff" taken from the affluent minority and given to the less affluent majority is strong.
Yea, it would be great if either party showed any interest at all in austerity but that ain't gonna happen .
Not growing any longer, but the army of give me more carried interest income tax breaks, juicy cost plus "defense" spending, drugs discovered in NIH laboratories I can patent and mark up the price 2000%. Good luck with the trickle down thing.
Yeah we could use another major depression. It would be good for the hedge fund guys to scoop up the remainder of middle income single family houses.
I don’t think he’s wrong, and this may be a disadvantage to what Bernie and others like him on the left are trying to accomplish. I feel like generally in American politics, the meaning of socialism falls between social democracy, actual socialism and straight communism. What Bernie describes is really close to social democracy, if not the definition, it’s probably was a mistake for him to use the term socialist, but I think he was closer to being one earlier in his life and that’s the term he’s stuck with despite his actual politics changing much closer to the term social democracy. The term social democracy wouldn’t carry the burden of socialism and communism, and that’s important when sending a message to Americans. On the other hand, knowing the right, they probably would have bastardized social democracy trying to lump it in with communism anyways so maybe it truly doesn’t matter.
