I've noticed that a lot of minorities (blacks and Hispanics) use MySpace while the rest of the world uses FaceBook. For the longest time, I just didn't understand why they used MySpace... it's quite outdated, full of spam and it's unorganized if you ask me. However, I think I may know one of the reasons why minorities use MySpace over FaceBook. It may seem controversial but I think it makes sense. Since FB used to be based around colleges and required a college email in the past, I think many blacks/Hispanics were prevented from joining FaceBook. Any thoughts?
I'm saying in the past, Facebook required a college email address. They've obviously opened the gate to everybody now.
Certain population groups tend to migrate/adopt things a lot slower than others, for whatever reasons they may have.
Well, in the past not many people were on Facebook at all then. Maybe they were being segregationists against all non-college students! The horror.
I wouldn't say that at all. I think it's based on age and education level. High school kids post more on myspace. College/older age people tend to go to facebook because it's more secure/less cluttered.
not saying fb ppl dont, but most ppl on myspace on trying to hook up with those fine ass chicas, ya know?
Why anyone would continue to use MySpace at this point is beyond me. Hell, I've noticed a lack of status updates on even Facebook lately (pretty much ever since they revamped it). Although Facebook seems ridiculously buggy lately. Status updates appearing one minute and disappearing the next. I didn't really "get" Twitter for the longest time, but I find myself using it a lot more these days.
FaceBook is streamlined, less liberal and more conservative with the design. MySpace lets you "redesign" their page while FaceBook doesn't. That should tell you who goes on WHAT social networking. Yes. Education level is also different on both. I don't do twitter, but it seems to be for peeps without a family or that aren't extremely busy. Exceptions are the people who have others tweet for them.
Myspace Music is still top notch. If I want to listen to a new band, their Myspace page is the first source I go to.
I don't even use MySpace for that anymore. But that is the only reason I can think of that anyone would use MySpace for.
I think we like that you can add gaudy distracting colors and loud, unexpected noises (autoplay music clips). Your theory is probably correct, though. Facebook was started and Harvard, and social networking sites are obviously popularized by word-of-mouth, so it only makes sense that your user base starts out a little whiter, and you'll obviously add features: like goofy-ass "80s movie character quizzes" and "pokes" and gifts, that appeal more to your initial fanbase. But we should probably actually look at the demographic statistics before trying to make reasons for them. And no need for the term "segregation" in the thread title. Outside of poll-taxes or water-hoses, it's all just sociology or human nature.
Idunno what that even is. I am part of a few music communities where there are people who post/recommend things I tend to like, so I give it a go (and vice versa). Not What/Waffles/etc, though I'm not against them--They're just not very personal.
The deal is, that lots of high school kids or so to say "teenagers" are attracted to all the stuff Myspace offers, like decorating your profile, music etc. Facebook may seem boring and 'dry' to those kids.
