It's still not official yet, but today is the deadline for AEG (Earthquakes owner) to decide if the team will be moved or not. Their negotiations with the city of San Jose fell apart on Monday and unless there is some miracle it seems like they will be moving to Houston.

    San Jose Mercury News article

If it happens they'll have a few months to set up a place to play, front office, team name and colors, marketing, and sales. I know they've talked with a few venues but have no idea how much work they've put into the rest of it so far.

AWESOME. I could watch go to at least 2 of the regular season games... hoping there are some playoff games as well... good stuff for Houston... do you think they will EVER allow us to see the open practices?

I just read that on the Chron and I knew you guys would be on top of it. Wasn't Landon Donovan contemplating returning to Europe? His stint was bad and didn't get much exposure...

Damn, DrewDog... I had some respect for you, my man, but not after that unnecessary comment...

    I'm with Drewdog.

There is nothing exciting about 1-0 scores.

I hope to get season tickets if I can. We should make the playoffs, the team had one of the best records in MLS last year and over half the league makes it anyway.

Landon went to Europe for a second time last year, threw a hissy fit and came back. At this point I doubt he will be going back any time soon.

With the immense hispanic population in the Houston area, I would think that major league soccer, if aggressively marketed to the latino audience, could be absolutely huge here.

(... and I have to say... Drewdog is absolutely right. It's fun to play. Boring to watch)

What are they changing their name to? They can't keep the Earthquakes...

No word on that yet. AEG had previosly agreed to leave the rights/awards of the franchise for the city, so if they get an expansion team they could use the name and would have the championship trophies.

One idea that I've heard and liked was Houston Generals, since Sam Houston was the general of the Texas army.

Here's a list I got from another board about possible name ideas.
    FC Houston
Club America Houston (This was from when America were talking about buy the team here)
    South Texas 1836
    Club Houston
    Houston Rovers FC
    Houston Eagles
    Houston Apollos
    Houston Republic
    Houston Drillers
    Houston Heat
    Houston Miners
    Houston Aguilas
    Houston Wanderers
    Houston Outlaws
    Houston Hurricanes

Probably not P.C. at this point, but what about Hurricanes?

I actually like watching soccer sometimes. There's more to the game than just scoring. My sister went to the championship game in Dallas and she said that was by far the most exciting sporting event she'd ever attended.

You are not allowed to have an opinion unless it is assigned to you by the board. Don't act like you didn't know.

    J/K

I agree with you by the way, Soccer IMO can be very boring to watch and I used to play so the common argument that "it's only boring because you don't understand the strategy of controlling the ball / position on the field" doesn't work.

I get the game, I just get bored after awhile. Why do you think they invented indoor soccer with a smaller field and no sidelines? To keep the game moving with more touches instead of long passes and more shots on goal because THAT is more exciting.

Since every time a socer thread is started here somebody feels the need to tell us that it's boring and not as good as other sports it's kind of a sensative subject.

I actually like Texas 1836. I'd get rid of the "South". Would be an interesting logo.

Would it create resentment from Mexicans?

Yeah, I'm guessing that wouldn't be the smartest marketing tool when they'll no doubt be relying somewhat on the Hispanic market in Houston to make this a successful team. :)

Here's a logo and uniform design drawn up by somebody based on the 1836 name.

    Logo

    Uniform

And I have to agree with RM95, the Mexican population probably wouldn't be too happy about it.

I wouldn't mind seeing the return of the Houston Dynamos.

It'll be great (should it happen) to have a MLS team in Houston. There are so many players in the league from the area that they could just get them together and form a pretty strong squad. Robertson Stadium would be the ideal place to start until a soccer specific complex could be built. My only hoe is that they can keep it as close to town as possible. There is such a shortage of good soccer fields in the city that it would be wonderful to have a complex close by for the inner city clubs to use.
