If they are so 'happy' about being themselves and if what they are really after is love from the same sex, why do they feel the need to dress as the opposite sex? Don't they believe that they can be loved for just being themselves and not having the need to be "manly" looking for another woman? (or "girly" looking for another man)
I think they themselves fall subject to gender identities assigned by the very societies whose traditional values they reject. Also, many of them maybe haven't studied the social sciences or ideas of self construction to formulate something entirely different so they fall back on what 'they' know.
No. I'm just curious as to why you are curious enough about this subject to ask everyone here in D&D about it. Dudes in Scotland sometimes run around in skirts. Does it matter?
Because I am in a country with an abundance of gay people (not in America) and I want to know more about their psychology. I don't want to be ignorant of their nature, I want to know why they think the way they do. That's all...
OK. Maybe someone will explain it to you. Personally, I've always seen cross dressing as a fashion choice, as well as an expression of not wanting to be placed in a "box" by everyone else. Not everyone who indulges happens to be gay, by the way.
Transvestic fetishism and male homosexuality are not strongly correlated at all. Most dudes who like to dress up in women's clothes turn out to be heterosexual. Assuming gay people are all cross dressers is like assuming they are all pedophiles, which is another common mistake.
I think this video from National Geographic can shed some light into this matter. <iframe style='overflow: hidden; border: 0; width: 720px; height: 462px' src='http://stagevu.com/embed?width=720&height=406&background=000&uid=lsmmutahbeyt' scrolling='no'></iframe>
The majority of gay and lesbian people I know dress just as anybody else does, with very little boyish or effeminate appearance, respectively.
Of all the gay people I know, not a single one cross dresses. As for lesbians, all girls wear jeans and shirts so I am not sure what cross dressing for girls would entail. Either you're in the closet, or you are a troll.
Most cross dressing males are straight. Among my gay friends only one dresses as a woman at times. Many lesbians I know seldom wear skirts or dresses and keep their hair cut short, others like to really dress up and look feminine. It's just plain human variety. I wear make-up on stage, if I were better at its application I might wear it on the street if I wanted to appear younger or cover a blemish or something. Some of it might have something to do with the role they want to play in relationships, it's my understanding that some (not all) gay relationships have someone in a masculine role and someone in a feminine role. My knowledge of this is limited, because I am straight and don't discuss sexual proclivities with many of my friends gay or straight.
