Great poll, haven. I had to go with the Mariner bandwagon voiding. The funny thing is that there were many knowledgable baseball fans who knew that, while Seattle had a great team that was well designed to win 116 games, it could very easily lose a short series. PS. When are you going to let us know who won the 2nd round of free agency?
Probably the same place Cleveland fans would be coming from if they were in the World Series, or Expos fans would come from if they were in the World Series. People aren't going to root for their teams if their teams aren't playing -- kind of pointless, I would think. I find it amazing that so many people think it's impossible for people to like the Yankees just because they don't. There are like 5 whole Yankees fans here out of a couple hundred posters. Yeah, they must all be bandwagoners. No way 5 people in 200 could actually like one team. I find it more amazing people are so concerned with the fact that others root for a team they don't like.
I want the Yankees to win because I don't like Randy Johnson. So if I was vocal about wanting the Yankees to win, would that put me on the bandwagon?
I don't find it so amazing. The Yankees are on top, and have been on top for a long time. They have almost every conceivable advantage at their disposable to help them win championship after championship. They have money flowing out their wazoos. It is hard to feel good about a team like that unless you have a been a fan of them through thick and thin.
So if I was vocal about wanting the Yankees to win, would that put me on the bandwagon? Absolutely, you bandwagonning loser. But if you're vocal rooting for the D-Backs or against the Yankees, that's OK.
I understand why people root for the Yankees, it's because they win. What pisses me off is that they act all high and ****ing mighty about it, calling themselves America's Team and crap, but hardly ever address the complaints against teams like the Yankees, and baseball in general. Plus, I can't stand it when people only start rooting for teams that win. It says something about them as a person...when the going gets tough, they get the hell out.
Hmmm... do me a favor, poll 100 New Yorkers about who their favorite team is. If they say anybody other than the Yankees or Mets... it's a pretty safe bet they're from somewhere else originally. I don't like the Red Sox, but their fans have spirit. You don't find any bandwaggoners here. That kicks ass. I think too many people just like to root for the winner, regardless of what team they are. The fact that the Yankees have a higher payroll than most teams just makes them easier to dislike.
I understand why people root for the Yankees, it's because they win. Or maybe they root for them because they like some of the players, or they like NY, or they like management or any number of other reasons. I've liked the DBacks for years because I like many of their players. I've liked the Jaguars for years because that was my Madden 2000 team. I've liked the St. Louis Rams for a couple of years because they are fun to watch. I hate the Cowboys because their players are criminals. There are far more reasons to root for or against a team than "they win". but hardly ever address the complaints against teams like the Yankees, and baseball in general. That's not a fan's job. Why don't we complain about the fact that tons of NBA players tend to train in Houston because of the Westside Tennis Center? That seems like an unfair advantage in signing free agents. Do we care? Hell no.
Rocketman could you please show me one place where any Yankee said they were America's team? The only place I have heard that is outside of New York and in the Media. Not one Yankee or anyone in the organization has said such a thing. And if you actually took your blinders off and watched the team for a little longer than an ESPN highlight, you would see that the Yankees are one of the hardest working, most humble teams you will ever see. They play hard every out and they prop each other up and root for each other. They are all "team first". There is not an ego among them (okay, maybe David Justice, but I think he sucks anyway).
Thank you! As far as I know there are only two of us cheering for the Yanks. Me and Pimpdaddy. And I have stated that I started out being a fan cause they were winning. Does one expect me to start out being a fan of the Angels or something? As far as I know a fan would follow their teams through "thick or thin". Well you will definitely find me here when the Yankees so start sucking.
It's not an unfair advantage if you don't have the space to sign them. Those teams could also easily build comparable centers. What do you mean it's not a fan's job? When they say that haters don't like them because they're jealous, then we tell them no, it's because of the system, they don't respond. They just idiotically say our owners should spend more money. So, I guess I was wrong...they do address it, just stupidly. Woohoo, you've been a fan of the Jags for all of 2 years. mc mark, the only Yankee I really don't like is O'Neill. He seems to complain after every play, and he's got a constant scowl on his face. I talk trash about Jeter, but it's more in the same way that people hate Jordan or other big superstars. I don't like the way that the team has been assembled and kept together. It makes the sport unfair. Make it like football or basketball, and they win every year, they'll get all the respect in the world from me.
Ya know, the Jags were my Madden 2000 team as well, and they still hold a tender place in my heart. Weird, huh? They were really a fun team to play with, though.
It's not an unfair advantage if you don't have the space to sign them. Really? You don't think it's advantage for free agents to want to play for your team? Wow. When they say that haters don't like them because they're jealous, then we tell them no, it's because of the system, they don't respond What's a fan supposed to say? Very few people argue that NYY doesn't have a definite advantage. They also have a phenomenal organization, and consistently make all the plays they need. There are plenty of teams with money -- ATL, BOS, LA, etc - only one consistently wins. Only one consistently gets those damned game-winning HRs. Only one team consistently doesn't choke (although I hope that changes Saturday and Sunday). I hate the Yankees as much as anybody, but why should I care that their fans are thrilled? I wish I were a fan, cuz I'd be going crazy the last few days. Woohoo, you've been a fan of the Jags for all of 2 years. Great comeback. Irrelevent, but great. I think you missed the whole point. The Jags aren't winning. I still like them. I've never lived in Jacksonville. Should I not be allowed to like them? Should I be scolded for rooting for them?
But I am with you on that one! You are calling me an idiot because I am Yankee fan and started out being a fan when they were winning. I wholeheartedly agree that the MLB needs some kind of RS or a cap, but I dont think Steinberner is going to listen to me.
I was making fun of you saying you were a fan for "years". 2 years is an eternity. I don't recall ever saying that you had to live in the same town to be a fan. I'm a huge Green Bay fan. I needed a team after my Oilers betrayed me, my Dad took me to a game in 1994, and I've been hooked ever since. As you know, I don't live in Green Bay. ROckets03, I admire your admiting that you're a bandwagon fan...that doesn't mean I agree with it any more.
I don't recall ever saying that you had to live in the same town to be a fan. Then why are these NYY fans bandwagoners? Because they started following them when they were winning? Unfortunately, Rockets03 can't prove his "loyalties" because the NYY never lose. Is that his fault?
