It seems as though everytime I look at the headline, Scola and Brooks made the clutch plays, but when I look at the boxscore, Martin leads us in points. I know Brooks likes to turn it up in the 2nd half and Scola likes to pretty much score at will with his array of moves down on the low block. So whats the deal with Martin, because to me it seems like he scores when neither Scola or Brooks are scoring and he generally scores more than both shooting very efficiently, but still is considered being a "quiet" scorer. On another note, is it necessarily a bad thing for him to be a quiet scorer or is it more of a good thing?
More of a good thing. The defense won't concentrate on him that much if he doesn't make the spectacular or flashy plays. He pretty much solves our "dead offense" lulls when we need him to.
How about the fact he goes to the ft 1000 times a game. and the fact his shots are non-flashy midrange jumpers.
I gotta admit I tuned into the game late yesterday and I thought he was havin a bad game until, ofcourse i saw the box score and noticed he dropped 28 very efficiently. He basically keeps us in the game quietly, every nite. His only downside is his defense and I think that might get better next year.
He is the perfect player to put next to Yao. On this team, he will have to take more "bad shots" because they are better then any shots we can get with the shot clock winding down. Next year the Rockets will finally be legit contenders.
It's a great thing Kevin is a quiet scorer. He makes his in the flow of the offense. He has a green light from Adelman but he rarely forces anything. Sometimes the game seems too easy for him. The kid is smart and Young and humble. You'll never here Kevin martin say it's on me. Or this is my team. He is the best player on the squad right now but like you said you don't always notice it because he is quietly doing his job. Also he has the kind of body that should allow him to play in his mid thirties. Replacing Martin for Tmac even at the cost of losing Landry is a stroke of genius and good luck. Kevin martin is a perfect fit on this team. Even his defense while not great is better than advertised and he will benefit even more with Yao back. Barring injuries we will put our best team on the court since the championship years and that will include one of the best quiet scorers in the league.
The only issue is in some critical moments we need some1 to force the issue, to create something from nothing. Can Martin be that guy? Or Books can be the guy? Or we do not need it?
I was going to make a thread about this. It also appears that many of Kmart's shots are falling short, and he seems to be having a bad game but then i look at the box score to see that he is 7-11 so far and has 19 points, or something like that. I think it's quite interesting.
Actually, Yao scored the same 'quiet' way for a big man. Barkley used to say "Yao's 20 pts are not dominant 20 pts".
I think a previous poster was right, he doest quite have that eye catching style when he plays and doesnt realy get pumped up when things are going good, as for the team i think its a good thing, as for the fans, ide like to see a little more flash....only if it means keeping the same value as a scorer.
This is where Kevin has an advantage over Tracy McGrady. Both guys are capable of scoring 25+ on a given night. This difference is that Tracy needs have possession of the ball to effectively score, to the point that the whole team needs to revolve around him for the offense to work. Kevin Martin, on the other hand, can get his points without dominating the ball. Kevin's efficient scoring works perfectly for Adelman's system where every player is given nearly equal opportunities to score.
The ability to get to the free throw line when the offense is struggling is a huge momentum changer. It helps prevent the other team from going on big runs. He really is one of the least spectacular scorers in the game, but I'll take efficient over spectacular anyday. He maneuvers well through the lane for easy layups quite a bit too whenever he isn't getting fouled.
He is not a lead dog, never has been, he is just uber efficient throughout the game, and when the foul calls dry up, his scoring goes down significantly. DD
