If you feel the need to explain/comment, explain/comment away.

I don't see how anyone can consolidate power throughout the country and make a proper national government. There is little doubt in my mind that Iraq will turn into a giant Somalia.

I figured this thread would quickly degenerate into a font of negativity. I was the sole vote (so far) for friendly dictatorship. I just don't know if a democratic govt. will be strong enough to keep a lid on what is a zoo of a country.

Considering our strongest supporters the Kurds are upset about the power sharing agreements for not giving them enough power while the Shiites are upset that they can't dominate through numbers I see Iraq heading towards being another Lebanon or more likely another Bosnia. Except one with a lot of oil and strategic value.

I don't know that these choices run the full gamut of what could happen there...but i voted for democracy, because it's certainly what I hope happens.

That's what I meant by number 3, a triple threat deathmatch.

I didn't make a moral judgement, I just shared my thoughts. Well, a benevolent despot would be far more acceptable than either a democratically elected collection of mullahs or another Saddam.

I figured you were saying it was positive, because you mentioned how everyone else had been negative, and seemed to contrast that with your post of a dictatorship.

As far a preferable government, I believe the will of the people would be preferable to dictatorship, even if the people willed that their leaders ruled by religion.

Well, I'd much rather have a friendly dictatorship than a unfriendly govt. elected by the people, but ruled by the mullahs.

But I thought we're establishing democracy?

Why can't their government be set up like some sort of parliament? Oh! That's right...too socialist.

The problem is that they lack the law and order plus an educated populaced needed for a healthy republic.

hit the nail on the head.

that's what pissed me off when we go in there saying we're "liberating" the Iraqi people and forming a democratic political system...... there's no way in hell that's ever gonna work. ever. all these people saying we're doing this to free the iraqis dont know what the hell they're talking about. these people have known nothing but dictatoraship and authoritative rule, on top of the fact that for the most part they are completely uneducated. logistically speaking, it cannot work.

those people know one thing when it comes to "politics" - force. and that's all they're gonna have when we leave there. i personally dont think they'll be any better off. just constant fighting between different factions killing each other for control, until saddam II takes over and we start all over again.....

Even I admit I was quite naive about that, but the past few months have disavowed me of that notion.
