    Girl's e-mail experiment clogs in-box for weeks

So you think you've got mail:

On Jan. 13, Shannon Syfrett, a 15-year-old ninth-grader at Central Academy in Macon, Miss., launched a chain letter over the Internet. E-mail chains that seek responses from around the world are the latest rage in science-fair projects, as kids set out to learn where and how fast information travels.

Shannon called her project "howfastorfar2003@aol.com," and she expected that in six weeks she "might get 2,000 or 3,000" replies to her note asking people to write back and pass her message along.

    That was her first miscalculation.

Still, for a teenager who has been out of Mississippi just once, the project opened the world to her, Shannon said: "I just didn't know how nice these people were."

Uh... somehow I doubt that the entire "world of the internet" was "opened up to her" if her parents haven't thrown the computer in the ol' muddy river by now. I wonder how many replies said "So how old are you again little girl? Got any pictures..." :(

You know, about 8 years ago when email was still kind of new and not everyone had it, this would actually have been a pretty cool experiment. She might have actually been able to see the message propogate throughout the country over a period of weeks or maybe start with one person in a new country and watch it spread across that area, etc.

Unfortunately, the world is now too wired to do an experiment like that.

That's too funny. I wonder how many copycat emailers there'll be after people read about this.
