After growing up in the the landfill known as Deer Park and then living in Westchase the last few years, this Friday I am FINALLY moving into the city. I'm buying a new house on the edge of the heights, at Prince and 13th. Everyone keeps telling me how living inside the loop is going to change my life due to everything being so convenient, but I guess I just can't grasp it until I get there. So tell me inner loopers, what do you love so much about it? I think what I'm looking forward to the most is being able to go out at night and not have to worry about the 30 minute drive back home. I'm also looking to hear about anything specific to the Heights that makes it a good place to be. I also need to give huge thanks to our fellow clutchfans poster, Rockets Red Glare. He got me in touch with his wife, who is a realtor, and she's been awesome to work with. I highly recommend her if any of you will be looking to buy/sell in the future.
I lived in the heights my whole life, I finally moved out a year ago after buying my first home. I cant afford a 60 year old, $275,000 home. My friend bought one for 215,000, 1400 square foot, all wood home. He can afford the mortgage, but he cant afford fixing it every other month that something breaks. He had to take out a loan to fix his roof. Other than that, Heights is amazing and I will I could still live there.
The air is fresher. Your life expectancy just extended 15 years. You now just inherited sports teams such as the Astros, Dynamo, Texans, U of H athletics and the Rockets. You can now do the mid-town pub crawl. The grocery stores are the best of the best. I can go on all day...
I lived in The Heights for 2 years and LOVED it. I was 5 minutes from work. Hell, I was 5 minutes from everything! I used to go home and take a nap during my lunch break. Good times. But I was renting a garage apartment. When it came time for me to buy a house, I just couldn't afford to spend $300K for a house built in 1920 that didn't even have a concrete slab foundation. But I loved living there and I'm sure you will too. Congrats.
Everything is nearby. You can bike anywhere you want to, if that's your bag. You now have access to the best Mexican food in the city, which is buried deep in the East End. Rockets, Dynamo, and Astros games are all within close reach. If you learn good shortcuts, you may never touch a freeway again.
Oh true that! No freeways for me. I live on W. 18th in the Heights and I get to UH and Minute Maid and Toyota Center w/o getting on I-10 or I-45 during peak hours. My Heights picks: El Rey Taco Lardeo Max's Wine Dive Glass Wall Onion Creek
Damn I'm so jealous. I'd do anything to live in Manhattan for a while. My wife is going to school up there and every time I go visit her I dread coming back to Clear Lake.
Bart: Go orange! Nelson: Go grapefruit! Ralph: Go Banana! Anyways, unfortunately, I still live outside the loop. I've house sitted in the Heights a few times and like you guys say, I love how everything is so near by. Also, it doesn't smell like ****. Definitely want to move out there some day.
