me n my friends were out at red star just chillin
we were chillin outside cuz some of our friends got kicked out
theres this africanamerican who remembers us from previous times, he always asks for money andstuff, real nice guy.
we gave him a dolllar, and he said he was happy because it was his birthday and he was turning 45.
about 20 min later we see him across the street in an arugement with 3 latino guys. i just happened to cross the street and walk by, and i heard the african american say that "nobody is messing with nobody..." or in other words just trying to drop the situation.
5 min later i see him and some other guy swinging at each other, and some1 pulls out a glock and shoots him twice in the chest, he fell straight to the ground, theres no way he survived...

ive seen some **** in my life, but i have never seen some1 just get shot cold blooded like that, especially over something that is so dumb and pointless

wat bothers me the most, and is still bothering me, is not the fact that some1 got shot and killed, but the fact that theres people out there that will just take someones life like that...it was his birthday....he was a very nice fella, now i dont know him personally, but i cud tell that despite a rough life, he doesnt have any bad intentions.....how can some just take someones life like tht man.......i mean if someone messes with my family or something i wudnt even hesitate for a second, but over something like THIS..i mean come on man, they were probably drunk, who cares who isnt drunk...but still...godamn....thats someones life man...someones son, someones dad.....i mean all i want to ask him is why?

    I feel you man.

On X'mas of 2000. I was walking some of my friends into a club and some acquaintance of mine got hit with 3 bullets in an apparent drive by. I was about 3 feet away behind him and that was pretty much the most sobering moment of my entire life. I wouldn't say I was really bad at that time, but it changed my entire life.

I don't know what to say, but it took a long ass time and to this day I don't think I will ever resume life like that point didn't happen.

People suck. Keep your head up. Glad to see ur safe though.

    Rest in Peace.

They probably thought that the shock would help with your spelling and grammar. I guess they were wrong.

Shooting fish in a barrel is not sportsmanlike.

Let the guy share his story in peace.

I'm starting to get pissed at the White Administration. It seems like they are dragging their feet re: the uptick in crime in Houston. Crank up policeman's salaries across the board and let's get more uniformed officers on the street and out of the strip clubs!

That could be a short-term solution, but even that would cost the city tons of money and -- you guessed it -- the cost will be passed on to you.

The real issue, IMO, is why the hell is there so much crime in urban America? I was watching a news segment on CNN the other day that highlights the recent homicide wave in Philadelphia; they're approaching 300 homicides just so far this year! That's an astonishing number, rivaling the homicide rate of a number of poor, developing 'Third World' nations around the globe. That's just one city, mind you. Not to mention that crime rate in the U.S. as a whole has declined over the past couple of decades, but it's still pretty damn high.

I don't think just throwing more cops at the problem is much of a solution...

Obviously the solution to this is more guns.

Actually, that's precisely how New York tackled this problem: by putting thousands of cops onto the streets. This kind of thing would never happen here because if someone tried to pull that kind of thing, theres no way in hell they'd get away. Too many cops, nearly on every corner. And too many damn people(witnesses) who would be there. People won't even dare trying this kind of sh iite. There's cops everywhere: inside subway stations, infront of random stores like duane reades, or busy corners with alot of pedestrians. Its true New York has the highest tax in the US, and alot of this is actually to deter terrorism, but they must be doing something right to become the safest Big City in the US.

I'm tellin ya, this would have NEVER happened in New York. You can't just shoot someone and walk away in New York. That just doesn't happen..

Bill White is a terrible mayor. Either that or the people of Houston have their priorities twisted. This is always "someone else's problem" as far as other people are concerned. What they don't realize is, this could happen to them, or anyone else - very easily. Who Cares if the tax dollars goes up a bit as long as it gives them a little piece of mind. The reality is, people just don't give a f*k.. That's the problem.

So the only solution is a police state...that sounds depressing.

New York is not a police state. And please your sarcasm is not needed here. They don't bother you and harrass you like HPD. They mind their own business. They're there, but not there. You get what I'm saying? You know they're there but they don't attract too much attention. Kind of invisible in a way. But just their presence is enough to deter crime.

They're not the kind of cops who stand over you like hawks watching your every move. No, it's not like that.

The formula works here and the people are happy. Better than getting shot by three latinos who just jump in a car and ride away like nothing happened. This could have been prevented, if you don't think so you're a moron.

My cousin in upstate NY got shot in the face on a driveby. Thankfully the bullet just lodged itself and there wasn't any major structural damage. But he was just here in America for the first time and was walking down the sidewalk, when he got shot by some assclowns for no reason.

And Yes more police officers on the street is a good thing.

Yes, I fully understand that concept...that's what the 'secret police' in a lot of countries do; "they're there, but not there."

I don't mean a 'police state' in the classical sense, but rather an overwhelming police presence...I find that idea somewhat troubling.

I am all for reduced crime, but not at any cost. I mean sure, we can put the national guard in some of America's big cities and have them just walk around to act as a deterrence against crime...I am sure it would work great.

Of course it could've been, but I would much rather deal with the 'root cause' of urban violence to try and find a long-term solution than just throw more hired guns at the problem; the latter is not a solution, it's a reaction.

Well that sounds all nice and good in fairy-tale land. But I believe that will ultimately have to be a societal change that will take place over generations. In the meantime the reality is murders take place at an alarming rate in certain areas.

That's why I said it could be a 'short term' solution. I am not necessarily opposed to it, but everything comes with a price.

Less guns, stricter laws on carrying guns in public, make it harder to obtain guns, more police presence.

correction- the rich people are happy, while there are still plenty of gun crimes and police brutality cases to go around...

not everybody is happy...most of the minorities in NY are scraed that they are going to be the next victim of a police shooting...

its not quite the utopia you described, but at the same time its the safest big city in America...

the giuliani and bloomberg administration cleaned up the city, but at what cost? they ignore the poor and lower class and cater to the rich, upper class, and tourists to keep them safer

Except that while there was an astounding crime drop in NY in the 1990's, there was a similar drop in most big cities in America that didn't implement anything of the sort. Turns out there was just a nationwide drop in crime over that period that likely had little to do with any specific policies.
