Took the rail up to meet my wife in midtown, texting some folks, and when we arrived at the Museum District stop and the doors opened, this guy takes off like a bolt and grabs my cell.

    But I held on.

Mini-scuffle (more like one hand tug of war) in the door and then onto to the platform with me yelling at the jackhole (and everyone just watching, virtually no one got off). I get that it's going nowhere...so I drop my shoulder into his chest and charge him (us) off the back of the platform and 4 feet down to the sidewalk, looking to knock the fight out of him. He definitely wasn't expecting this...but kept his grip tight and gave me the weakest sissy left hook.

I goofed up here and didn't think when I pulled back my right hand to crush his skull into the sidewalk....because that gave him an out and he was gone with my phone in a heartbeat.

    Silver Linings:
My phone was actually a refurb replacement that was driving me insane and I'm up for an upgrade anyway - I couldn't pick something better to be robbed.
I went to a cop down the block to go ahead and file a report for insurance...but they actually took it seriously and have already arrested the guy's buddy (evading and MJ).
Dummies actually got back on the rail later and were ID'd, so the cop had me get in and we TORE down Fannin after the rail - pretty fun.
I may be down a phone...but I guarantee that little punk is paying for his $30 pawn shop win with a jacked up back. Only wish I could have added in a fractured skull.

    Thumbs down:
To the loser Metro driver who kept the train there and watched (with everyone else in the front car) the entire throwdown....and then left afterwards and didn't even call it in. One passenger did come back (guy #2 tried to snatch her purse) and mentioned that folks were upset that the driver did zilch.

And yes, I should have been more aware - I knew about folks (ipods and iphones) becoming mass transit targets...but I do look around me and noticed the guys (just seemed like a couple of guys chatting with their backs to me)...I doubt I could have done anything differently other than kept the phone in my pocket. But my fault either way for making myself a target.

What I'm trying to decide now is......

    (1) Activate my old super outdated phone (LG enV) for now and wait for better phones to drop in Q2

    (2) Pay the $50 insurance and get another refurb replacement (Motorola Droid)

    (3) Get an iPhone and risk iPhone 5 or 4.5 coming out in June/Sept

    (4) Update to another Droid now....and if so, which one? I'm too much of a geek to get something that's already on the cusp of being obsolete (Droid 2)

    Nice you got some retribution.
The Atrix is pre-order Feb 13 and drops March 6 if you can wait out that long.

The driver set you up. This is classic, seen it a million times.

    Glad you're ok, bro.

The perp was white. Why? Because no one did anything. If the perp was black, everyone would have been jumping on him.

If the perp was a sexy blonde, and I was on the train, I would have stolen emojohn's shoes and watch.

I'm shocked the Metro employee did nothing...no wait I'm not.

PS Light rail is a waste of money. I can't wait until the third ward line smells like urine and is full of panhandlers.

They were two black guys, late teens to early twenties. "Mine" was maybe 5-10, light skinned, lean, and wearing an olive green jacket with white sleeves.

Very interesting. Hopefully you've shared this description with the authorities who can help make an arrest.

If you felt pain when he punched you, this case is technically a robbery. Otherwise, it's theft from person. They are both felonies. Make sure they get charged as such and not some lame misdemeanor theft where the dudes get time served in the county.

When I lived in France and traveled in Italy, I saw quite a few "shows" put on by metro thieves. They'll often cause a distraction with a verbal or physical fight, and then have accomplices pick pocketing people while they are distracted watching the fight. My grandparents were robbed like that twice in the week they came to visit! Not stereotyping, but a lot of the time the thieves were gypsies.

what enV phone did you have?
    1,2,3 generation or touch?

I had the 3, good phone, and it was stolen in wal-mart when I left it on a shelf. Not the greatest phone, but still steal worthy.

Then a friend lent me and I still use the 1st generation enV. it's huge and I can set it down anywhere and not have to worry about it being stolen. I lost it on campus a couple days ago, never thought I'd see it again, a custodian picked it up, I was able to contact him by calling my phone and went over to pick it up at his house yesterday. kind of shady. I gave him $5 for his trouble, and that probably was more than he could get from selling the phone.

I just pre-ordered the iphone 4 for verizon today. I'm kind of worried now about having a phone with value, especially with my knack for losing phones.

I feel bad for posting that now. I didn't mean anything by it. Kind of wish emjohn didn't mention it.

It relates to another thread. Look for the bike thread, slick. And then I want you to get on your knees and apologize and give me offerings of doughnuts and bacon.
