Talk about your Valentines Day massacre.....I got canned at a job Ive been at for years. Cupid shoots everyone with one of his "lovely arrows" and he stabs me in the back with a machete. I guess this gives new meaning to love sucks. Oh well..... I havent done the job search thing in a long while, so can you guys refresh me on the going rate for a college student with medical experience, engineering experience as well as the usual sales experience looking for full time work and benefits. How much should I be asking for....$12.00, 14.00, 16.00, or 20.00 hourly? I dont want to go too high and turn employers off.....I need a job ASAP before bills get behind. Any insight appreciated........
You've been at this job for YEARS yet you want to know the rate for a college student. I'm confused. Sorry about the news. That sucks. EDIT: I took out the quote since I had the first post. Somebody in another thread pointed out how pointless that is and I just realized I did it.
RIF is the new 4 letter word nowadays, but it seems to be happening in different areas. If it makes you feel better, my wife as human resource manager is about to let up to 30 people go at the printing plant she works at. Some of these folks are sole breadwinners with good income of $80K plus. It's sad, but she can't inform them till next week...
I was fired, is that true? Details please..... And what is RIF? Mac......a clinic on the north side of town.
There is a difference between being fired and layed off. Fired is when they don't want you anymore but need your position and layed off is pretty much the opposite.
Usually if you are fired you are not eligible for unemployment benefits but maybe there are other forms of compensation that you are eligible for, I was laid off a few months ago and received unemployment but it sucked and I found a job within two weeks making more than I was before and hopefully you will be as lucky as I.
Actually lPun, Ive always been that lucky. This is the first time I've ever been fired....but I have been twice layed off....and each time I bounced to much higher paying gigs. Hopefully the luck continues. On my first day of unemployment, I went to every doctors office I could find on the north side. A doctor Ashish Kapoor is reviewing my resume, he has a few openings....I have a good resume so no worries there. I have a second interview next week with Bankers Life. But this looks to be a commision job.....I have no probs with it but I would prefer salaried at this time.
Even if you're fired, you can contest that with TWC. I was fired from two jobs ago and I thought it was bogus. I filed for unemployment and they sent a letter to my old job. They decided not to contest it and so I got my unemployment. I would go ahead and file with TWC tomorrow if I were you.
Do you research on the interent- hotjobs.com, monster.com, etc. I haven't gotten a job through those sites but I got a good idea of what my salary should be and what opportunities there are. Last 2 ways I found my job- 1) Go directly to companies websites, they will post openings there. 2) Networking- talk to friends and former coworkers and see if they know of openings. And in your next job say it was a reduction in force. Don't say you got fired, or they will think you did something wrong.
RIF means they let you go, but possibly with benefits (retirement, severance). This depends on the company. The key is that it all looks like you were just an unfortunate one, when in fact you most likely got screwed over. Or you screwed people over and someone got some payback. In the end, RIF means unemployeement. Good luck on future VD.
It seems like semantics, but there's a HUGE difference between getting RIF'ed and fired. I got RIF'ed. I had no problems finding propects and got a couple of good offers, so I could take my pick. However, before the layoffs that got me, the company went on a witch-hunt, trying to find disciplinary infractions that would justify FIRING people, so they could avoid severance packages and paying unemployment. A friend of mine was fired for having "inappropriate materials" on his workstation (a small collection of mp3 files), and has yet to find another job. He's still contesting his dismissal with TWC, but it doesn't look too good. If you were truly fired, I would take an offer as quickly as possible, so you can put some distance between yourself and your old job. Also, you can try saying that you were RIF'ed instead of fired, but many job applicaitons specifically ask about firings, so if they call your old boss, you're screwed.
email me you resume buddy, i am a head hunter for the oil/gas industry, my email is in my profile. Hope I can help!
You can be fired and still get unemployment as long as there wasn't just cause. Meaning as long as you showed up for work and didn't do something too negligent. If your boss fired you because he didn't like you, you can get unemployment.
Dude, that sucks...Good luck...When you interview, be up-front about why you got fired, unless you were stealing, fighting, sexing, or whatever other activity that is not PC...
