Hello, I know nothing about smartphones (I've avoided them), so for the purposes of these questions please assume that I'm rediculously retarted.

I have an old T-Mobile pay-as-you-go SIM card that I've just been switching from one unlocked phone to the next whenever I needed a newer phone.

I want a smartphone now because I'm geeking out on them (they're more powerful than my first computer) - is there a way I can put my T-Mobile SIM card in a smartphone, continue using the minutes (they're cheap) and the phone number for that card for voice, and then get regular smartphone connectivity otherwise?

I've read about people using Google Voice with their phone, porting a number or otherwise. That might be an option. I've been searching for a good answer to this question, and haven't really found one.

Yes, you just have to make sure that the phone is "unlocked" and compatible with TMobile.

I did just that with the Galaxy Nexus.

Yes, I believe you can. If you can't, I think there is an option from T-Mobile to get a new SIM card but get the same number.

So, do y'all just use Wi-Fi for internet connectivity?
