yes, I'm turning to the one place where you can find out almost anything for some fashion advice. . .

can anyone tell me the best method they've found for getting jeans to look shredded at the bottom?

I've used scissors to just cut off the cuff [or whatever you'd call it], but sometimes, that doesn't get a very ragged look, even after running it through the washer and dryer.

so are there any secret methods out there?

    thanks.

Don't tell me, you pay $40 for pre-faded jeans, right?

Heck, if I had known that faded/worn out jeans were going to be a hot fashion item, I would have never thrown away all the jeans I tore up in high school...

You're in luck...I think it's even more fashionable for your jeans to actually FIT.

OK, you've been to my house, and you looked like a man, but now, I'm not so sure.

Considering I wore really baggy jeans in high school and that I've only gained a few pounds, I could probably fit into my old jeans. :)

I'm talking about selling my old jeans to teenagers at $50 a pop...Faded, torn bottoms, holes in the knees, bleach spots...you name it, my jeans had it...

Also, does anybody remember when Levi's were the cheap jeans you got at Wal Mart and Jordache was expensive?? Now, it's the exact opposite...

I'm sure a good tailor could tear up your jeans quite nicely for a nominal fee ;)

Seriously, try using a safety pin maybe to pull out the threads from the bottom where you cut the cuffs off.

    it's okay.

    I expected the abuse.

I just see people whose jean-ankles are cooler than my jean-ankles. and deep inside, a part of me cries.

    is that so wrong?

seriously, has anyone tried using a knife?

    HOW DO THEY DO IT?!

I still wear REALLY baggy jeans because...

I was fat in high school and college and wore baggy jeans then. I lost a TON of weight since and still wear the same jeans because I'm just too freakin' lazy to go shopping. People laugh at me and tell me my jeans are big enough to fit two people. So I invite them to try!

Whoa, I think this post deserves to be in the "best pickup line" thread!

I have lots of jeans like this...just get a size to big (length-wise) and wear them unrolled. I always buy long length..but don't care for the torn up look...i just buy new jeans. I got tons of torn up bottoms on jeans that i don't wear anymore.

Yes, walk on the ends of them. It's a fairly lengthy process but it ends up looking better than 'artificial' methods.

Mine usually end up that way unintentionally, because I am quite short.

Why don't you just fold them over and roll them up tightly? Throw on a pair of topsiders. No socks needed.

I've been watching some movies lately, Crouching Tiger blah blah and similar older movies with guys like Jet Li in them. Anyways, you need to go to China and get a part in one those movies. Wait for some fight scene where a person using a whip to make people explode or a person who can cut a horse in half with a sword from 10 feet away is fighting. Then, just wait for the right oppurtunity to toss your jeans in their line of fire and I gurantee you'll get shredded jeans

Seriously, I know the look you are talking about. I too get it from walking around with my pants low and stepping on the end or letting it scrape against concrete siewalks. I don't do it on purpose, I just forget to put a belt on sometimes and before you know it, my new jeans are shredded.

Whoa, how freaky. I was sitting in front of my computer and noticed how the old pair of jeans I'm currently wearing are actually shredded at the bottom due to wear and tear over the years from the exact same descriptions you gave. concrete sidewalks, forgetting a belt, etc.
