 http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2010/09/for-old-times-sake-vernon-maxwell/ For Old Time’s Sake: Vernon Maxwell Mad Max, what a character. Most famous for his playing days with the Rockets as well as some off court issues, Vernon Maxwell was a gritty dude. He hit countless game winners, shined in the ‘94 Finals, and had the superhuman ability of being able to keep Michael Jordan in check. He was a corner back in high school so lock down defense came naturally I guess. He led the league in 3-pointers made in both the ‘90-’91 and ‘91-’92 seasons and holds the Rockets franchise record for 3-pointers made with 730. Mad Max was as clutch as they come and went all out on the hardwood. Gotta respect that. Shout out to Bobby Blue for the mix. -Schneezy For more old school videos, check out SLAMtv in the Media section. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/93CFeNMXgEI&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/93CFeNMXgEI&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
i was gonna post this....but then i remembered it's the same clip everyone posts of Maxwell, since there arent anymore out there.
He's still a traitorous b*stard for ditching the team in the 1995 Playoffs, and he's a thug off the court.
Since at the time we had Clyde, and since Max played like a two guard, we didn't have room for him since we had Kenny, the up and coming Cassell and Eile.
He was the backup shooting guard until he went ballistic over playing time in the first round and bailed on the team. Ther e was an envisioned role for Maxwell, but he chose to not accept it. I understand the frustration but quitting on your team in the playoffs is the ultimate no-no for me. It all ended well for the Rockets that playoff run, but Maxwell was dead to me from that moment on. I still rank him above Pippen as my least favorite ex-Rocket.
correction; nobody was able keep MJ in check, not Michael Cooper, nor DJ, nor Drexler, nor Sidney Moncrief, all of whom were better defenders than Mad Max not in my books; insofar as being clutch, MadMax can't even hold the jock straps of Bird, Robert Horry, Reggie Miller, nor Kobe
you obviously didn't watch the Rockets vs Bulls in the 90s. Stats don't lie reality don't lie http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=142418 F**K you, Michael Jordan don't lie either! and CLUTCH's article's don't lie ! http://clutchfans.net/news/1549/rudy_t_reflects_on_rockets/ On the Rockets vs. Bulls debate I finally got a chance to talk to Michael Jordan years [later] over at Barkley's house and he thought that the best matchup they would have had during that era was against us because of the way Max used to play him and how our big guys used to dominate their inside.
come on dude, don't act like one of those newb t-mac fans here. you know better to check the stats before telling people here you don't need knee surgery http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/HOU/leaders_career.html 3-Pt Field Goals 1. it was written in Clutch's article about Rudy T that Michael Jordan stated that Max and the Rockets played them well. if someone doesn't believe that, then they are calling Rudy T Michael Jordan CLUTCH liars.
That's a bit of revisionism. We got Clyde because a) Damn! He's available?? and b) Vernon was unstable and Rudy worried about how reliable he'd be in terms of even being around when they needed him. He had already been fined and/or ejected 3 or 4 times that season. Then he went AWOL on the team.
yet some people didnt like von wafer cause he had 'tude. maybe we would have supported von if he punched a portland fan in their face.
Ice cold would be the way to describe Maxwell's 3 point shot. He hit some clutch 3's in his career, but he shot a terrible percentage. Kenny Smith rarely gets enough credit for his shooting on those teams - he was a damn good 3 point shooter. He was your definition of ice cold. Of course he had his own issues. lol.
After seeing these highlights, I can't help but think that Vernon's offense might have been a little overrated. He was a great defender and could hit the shots that others would shy away from, but he was just another player on those teams. Hakeem, Horry and Thorpe made those teams because a frontline of that caliber didn't exist on that level. I've said my piece.
