Romoeren shatters ski flying record; Ahonen wins title March 20, 2005 SportsLine.com wire reports PLANICA, Slovenia -- Norway's Bjoern Einar Romoeren set a world ski flying record for a second time Sunday, leaping 239 meters to win a World Cup event. Finland's Janne Ahonen of Finland, who already had clinched the overall World Cup title, finished sixth. Ahonen jumped 240 meters during the last round but fell. He was briefly hospitalized but returned. Ski flying is contested off unusually big hills, with the jumpers covering great distances. Romoeren first broke the world mark during training earlier in the day, going 234.5 meters to beat the mark of 231 set by Matti Hautamaeki of Finland in 2003. In the second round, Hautamaeki jumped 235.5 to reclaim the record for just three minutes before Romoeren's next leap. Romoeren totaled 463 points to win Sunday's competition with jumps of 226 and 239 meters. Countryman Roar was second with 453.9 points with leaps of 230.5 and 224 meters. Andreas Widhoelzl of Austria finished third and Hautamaeki was fourth.
