SAN ANTONIO (AP)—San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili has won the NBA’s sixth man award given to the league’s best reserve. Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring, averaging a career-high 19.5 points with 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Ginobili came off the bench in 51 of the 74 games he played this season. The Spurs have a 1-0 lead over the Phoenix Suns in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series. Suns guard Leandro Barbosa won the award last year. Ginobli got 123 of 124 first-place votes. Barbosa came in second with 283 points and the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Terry was third with 44. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_y...2M5nYcB?slug=ap-nbasixthman&prov=ap&type=lgns No 1 is suprised here I'm sure. This award needs to be re-done. Guys like Ginobili who are getting starter min. just isn't right, IMO.
technically 'came off the bench' but played as many minutes as anybody on the team... I'm with JVG, this award sucks
in the spurs defense ,does it really make sense to have parker/duncan/big nose all start at the same time?
It's a disgrace that he can even be applicable to get this award. So many other true "sixth" men that should have gotten it.
How can you lead the team in scoring and be called a "6th man"? The 6th man is by definition of the name the 6th best player on a team.
the definition is supposed to be the 6th man to come into the game--not the 6th best player. It's not even supposed to mean the 6th highest mpg on the team. It's just the best non starter. If Kukoc and McHale can win this, why not ginobody. that said, the award is meaningless to me.
There is no way Landry will make the NBA all 3rd team...I doubt scola will even make that team...anyways anyone know who won the other awards?? like COY, ROY, and MVP?? and most improved player also?
Did u even read.........He said All NBA sixth man 3rd team............. Anyway.........This award is dumb..........They should change it to the best supporting player........Like David west for NO........or Andre Miller for Phila.........Something like that............ Does it really make any body feel good about this award.........It is really just making bench player have something to play for i guess.......Which with Manu.......he just takes that away
Then by your definition neither Barbosa last year or Miller the year before could have won it because they also played starter minutes, last year Barbosa played even more minutes than Ginobili if i am right. Last 5 6MOY winners were 06-07 Barbosa 6MOY year was at 32.1 MPG 05-06 Miller 6MOY season was at 30.6 MPG 04-05 Ben Gordon was at 24.0 MPG 03-04 Antawn Jamison was at 29.0 MPG 02-03 wow... and i just figured out that Bobby Jackson got the award in the previous season (02-03) playing 28.4 MPG and scoring 15.2 ppg on 0.464 FG shooting, Hope he can regain his shooting for this series.
Ricky Pierce won it in '90 averging 23 points a game, in 29 minutes a game. 6th men back in the day used to REALLY be high powered. http://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/smoy.html
