So what if Yao has put on a few pounds of fat? It's probably water weight gain anyway. The boy needs some rest, and it sounds like he is getting it.

I think Yao will work on his rebounding after he rehabs from surgery...

Right now, rebounding probably stresses his ankles too much , its good that he's working on his cardio and shooting touch though.

He could stand to gain some weight so I'm not worried about the extra 10 or so lbs.

Hopefully he can turn the extra weight he is gaining into muscle.

it isn't muscle...it is fat. fat doesn't make you a better conditioned player. yao would really be sucking wind if he put on 20 pounds of fat.

I'm not talking about putting on 15 -20 Lbs of fat......It's called cross training. And with his build,he WILL put on weight which will help him down low.
Yao's had plenty of year round aerobic activity..too much if you ask me.Let him spend five days a week at Westside pumping iron and loading up on carbs..along with his cardio...and plenty of rest!

    - Other than regular checkups for his health, he's also working out at Toyota Center nearly everyday. He's running to keep in shape and also practicing shooting. He's started practicing 3-pointers.

    - Yao says that Charlie Ward is the only one that's working out more than he is.

both news are great i hope a better season for charlie

    pd

Want Yao to rebound? Keep him under the basket instead of chasing down pick and rolls. Hell, I think we could all agree Shaq is a little more agile and the other Van Gumby doesn't have him guarding guards. He drops to the paint. 7'6" will rebound if it is in the paint!!

im about 150 pounds, i can gain 5 pounds of fat in 2 weeks easy. i dont think it works any different for a 300 pounder.

Some of you aren't looking at the big picture:

    1) The NBA body is built in phases: You eat and put on weight in the beginning of the offseason, lift and sculpt that weight later in the offseason, then during the regular season try like heck to keep the weight on. I'm sure Yao lost at least 10 lbs. during the marathon of the NBA season.

    2) The article and yaomania say that Yao is at the TC with Thibodeau almost every day. A JVG-led coaching staff sits silently by while their no-discipline fat ass of a center eats Twinkies and ho-hos on the couch watching his "stories" all day? Sounds about right.

    3) Maybe Yao needs to shoot 60% from 18-20 ft in order to get some looks in the vaunted "Pick-and-TMac pull up J play-except when we're desperate in the playoffs and then suddenly the 7'6" guy becomes a viable option."

    4) I know that I'm as comfortable with Yao taking an open 18fter on the open "pop" as I am with TMac shooting it. Karla Malone took 10-12 of those jumpers a game. Or maybe we want Yao crashing down off the pick for all the offensive rebounds he gets.

    5) The offseason is about expanding your game. The Yao-TMac PNR play is light years ahead of Francis-Yao PNR aka Francis-and the 7'6" speedbump-play, but it is developing and light years behind Stockton-Malone because Yao is not used enough as a shooting threat or a rolling threat like in the 4th quarter of Game 5 in the Dallas series. Oh yeah, did Dallas ever stop that play?

    6) In the future, a reliable 18-20 ft jumper FT line extended by a gifted passer in Yao with an active 4 man down low (SAR please?) = a JVG high post offense??? Dare we dream?

Well I think the international 3 point line is only a bit over 20 feet, so maybe that's where they got confused... ;)

too much aerobic activity? the guy still has trouble maintaining his energy thru an entire game.

yao doesn't need more weight. he simply needs to strengthen his upper body so he doesn't have any of those easy strips on rebounds and when he takes it to the hole. if yao gains more weight it could be detrimental to his health, which has been amazing for a guy of his size. if yao puts on 5 to 7 pounds of muscle in his upper body this offseason that would be great to me. that doesn't sound like much but it would be a nice progression for him.

Yao working on his range makes his game more deadly with Tmac in the high pick n rolls.

robbie380 - When I say too much aerobic activity,I mean over the whole year......The vampiric drain that is the CNT takes it's toll.Yao's commitments need to be scaled down so that he is competing on a level playing field w/the rest of the NBA.Ming will get, bigger, stronger, and have much more left in his tank.Hey,we might even get 35 min./night out of him. :)

Exactly what I was thinking, it seems that JVG has told Yao to practice that shot near 20 ft out so when he and T-Mac do the PnR he can get the ball back and shoot it from there at a high %, which is basically another option to him running towards the basket off the PnR. I still prefer having him running inside though and getting an easy layup or dunk (as happened numerous times against Dallas).

I guess the weight gain has something to do with Yao hanging around his restaurant the whole day, they have some nice food in there, and the rice can help him gain weight quickly with that nice mangolian beef.:)

I wish the best for Yao this off season, China called him out to force him to come back soon to China, but I still think he will get enough rest this off season, I am not so sure though about the necessary time that he will need to spend here to improve his game next year.

Exactly. Only guys on steroids can build muscle/gain mass while losing fat at the same time. In order to transform your body legally, you got to lift and eat and get big. Put on the muscle AND some fat, then later you turn up the cardio to lose the fat and sculpt your body.

Ten pounds of fat/muscle gain in a couple of weeks seems a bit much to me. But we are talking about a 300+ lb behemoth so maybe the normal progression is a bit skewed. As long as the writer is off base on it being ALL fat gain, then I'm not worried. Falsone and company know what they're doing.

I think a high pick and roll with SAR and TMAC while Yao down low for the easy lob pass or offensive rebound could be absolutely deadly for this team.

Opposing teams would have a tough time guarding a play like this because you can double TMac and get burned by an SAR wide open jumper or roll off of Yao (or any of the guards) and have a man wide open. YOu can stay on Tmac and have him beat you to the basket or with the jumper.

I think PnR with Tmac handling the ball and Yao or SAR (hopefully) setting the pick could cause nightmares for other teams.

I guess he is tired of no getting the ball inside, couldn't get the offensive rbs, so what the heck, I'm going to ourside to get the dam ball.
