Not sure, but I was raised on this show. In fact, I was raised in front of the TV and I turned out TV.
^^^ so much win. I watched a ton of Simpsons growing up, and I remember my teachers and church leaders really not liking it when I talked about the show :grin:
1) Never choose an elephant for your backyard over 10,000 cash. 2) Robin Lopez will eventually want to kill you and more then once. 3) Cannonballs fired into your stomach MAY cause damage but be pretty dam funny.
Most Christian Families I knew didn't allow their kids to watch it because of the "adult" themes, and the mild language, not to mention George Bush Sr. saying something to the effect of "we need American families to be more like The Waltons and less like The Simpsons" I seriously knew a family that let their kids watch ANY movie. R rated and everything, boobs, guts, F-bombs? No problem... but they weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons. Talk about stupid. In the house I grew up in after my mother remarried, I wasn't even allowed to watch television period. Luckily, my cousin (whose family was very devout Christian/Conservative but not insane) was allowed to watch it and he was a Simpsons fanatic. He taped every episode, so when I got to visit him we would watch all the episodes over and over again. I think the Simpsons backlash died down considerably when Southpark came along in 96 and blew them out of the water in terms of "crudeness".
It's funny because now with shows like South Park and Family Guy, themes brought up during the 90s in The Simpsons are not a big deal. Older people and teacher did not like it, but today, in college, I have had professors play episodes of the Simpsons to demonstrate themes from the class on numerous occasions.
I guess back when it was more Bart focused they didnt want their kids emulating him. Tormenting Skinner and calling his dad Homer was too in your face back then.
Because it was animated it was thought of as a kids show. The Simpsons wasn't a kids show. People didn't understand this. They thought it was a cartoon and therefore it shouldn't have adult themes if it was for children. Most of the Simpsons episodes in the early-going had a lot of "good messages" but many Christian Families adhere to a very stupid analogy when it comes to a show that they don't like. It goes a little something like this "Now, you wouldn't eat a brownie if you knew there was a little bit of poop in it would you?" "So why would you watch a show if there was just a little bit of morally-odious content?" again... Many people said if The Simpsons had been a live-action sitcom nobody would have cared since Married With Children was pushing the envelop. Of course if it wasn't animated, it also would have failed miserably since it would have been severely limited.
At one point, we figured our daughter was old enough to watch a Simpsons episode.... then something would come on that would make us say, "Whoa! hey! Let's just change the channel..." We tried this a few times and then realized... no....it's just not a appropriate for kids. Surprisingly, this was also actually true of such shows as King of the Hill. Of course, Family Guy and Southpark are out of the question. So.. we stick with Disney and Nick.. and even THEY are sometimes inappropriate.
My dad and I always watched it growing up and most of my friends were allowed to watch it. Another show my family watched together was In Living Color. I think I was the only kid in my class whose parents allowed to watch it. I bought one of the seasons on DVD a few years ago and looking back I have no idea why my parents allowed me to watch that show.
oh yeah, a while back at church the pastor dropped a Simpsons reference during a sermon and I was the only person that laughed. That was awkward.
Without the Simpsons, Family Guy wouldn't even be thought of. Hmmm... lets see. Fat White Dad/Husband with low IQ, low income job and penchant for stupid ideas? check. Voice of Reason Wife/Mother with annoying voice and a bit of a wild side on ocassion? check. 2 older kids and a baby? check. I think Family Guy CAN be funnier (when they put a decent plot together instead of revolving around 2000 pop culture references per episode), mainly because The Simpsons haven't been good since the 90s.
It depends on how old his kid is. There are sometimes themes on The Simpsons that aren't appropriate for little kids.
wasn't allowed to watch Married with Children or Arsenio Hall.. Simpsons was fine as far as i can remember.. Don't remember a ton of people who weren't allowed really
