Australia was upset about the booting episode and the producers had to apologize to the City of New Orleans because of this song: Long before the Superdome, Where the Saints of football play, There's a city where the damned call home, Hear their hellish rondelet: New Orleans! Home of pirates, drunks, and whores... New Orleans! Tacky, overpriced souvenir stores... If you want to go to hell, you should take a trip To the Sodom and Gomorrah of the Mississip': New Orleans! Stinking, rotten, vomiting, vile... New Orleans! Putrid, brackish, maggotty, foul... New Orleans! Crummy, lousy, rancid and rank... New Orleans!
Sounds about as silly as 03, Rockets R Us, Major, I, and any other Indians here suing the Simpsons for their obvious stereotype in the character Apu.
Not a bad idea!! While were at it, let's get the Irish to sue for the stereotypical character Willie, the Dutch to sue for the portrayal of the fat kid who loves choclate, the Asians to sue for Dr.Nick, and the PETA people to sue for abuse to dogs (Santa's Little Helper) and cats (snowball 1, snowball 2).
Willie is Scottish, dammit. We Irishmen have an unblemished reputation. Must be all those Mc writers on the show...
Wait, Dr. Nick isn't Asian! The kung fu guy, who translates the Meesta Spakool box for Homer, thats the only asian dude.
I was pissed off about that when I first saw it, but I got over it. It's a freakin' cartoon for Gods sake!! Get over it, Brazil!!
APU RULES! I also love the cab driver and "nudie bar" owner from Married with Children. He was the most steretypical Indian around, but he was funny as hell.
There isn't a single character in the Simpson's that isn't a stereotype - thats sort of why it used to be funny.
OK OK SO I WAS OFF ON A FEW!! Oh yeah, Dr.Nick is sooo asian, c'mon, he looks asian. He has to be some part Asian.
Dr. Nick is the best character on the show. "Calm down old man-- you're going to give yourself skin failure!" "Oh, the coroner. I'm so sick of that guy!" "Did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College too?"
Willie Scottish Reference! Episode that Santa's Little Helper gets trapped in the vents in the school. "Is that lard woman?" "Then Grease me up!, there's nothing faster than a greased scottsman" I love how the Simpson's uses stereotypes and satire to portray some pretty moral issues.
"There's no such thing as Scotchtoberfest." Willie: "There's not?" Everyone needs to lighten up. Cartoons are about stereotypes. They're about reducing our world to two dimensions. The Simpsons function to make us aware of those stereotypes - or, in the literary sense, "archetypes". The whole town's full of them. If you turn your brain on while you watch, you'll see how it makes you aware of your own prejudices and preconceptions. So it's actually enlightening. Also, ethnic characters such as Apu, Moe, and Krusty have become multi-dimensional over the years and have been given some background and character depth. The longer you watch the show, the more they look - human (the yellow, four-fingered kind). They may fall into categories of behavior, but people do tend to behave in predictable ways sometimes. No use denying it just to be PC.
