    FGA: field goal attempt
    FTA: free threw attempt
    PPG: point per game

    PPG-FGA-FTA

Large number indicated better offensive performance of a player as an individual. In a particular game, team with large number usually win the game.
I found this is true for most of the cases that I oberserved.

Please share if anyone has an better idea.

    PER

The single most complex rating system, stats will NEVER be able to show how great a player is but PER is the closest to achieving that feet.

The team with the highest PER wins 100% of the time so you have your answer at the team level.

Is this actually a joke or something? :D

I vote for efficiency rating, EFF.

The only thing is almost all ratings are based on the main statistics tracked of course and their derivates.

For example shane Battier has a PER of like 13 which is below the league average because it doesn't track things like tipped balls (think about how many times battier has kept a ball alive) charges taken, and alot of his fouls are either smart fouls or attempts to take a charge. Same thing with a Bruce Bowen who i think Battier is turning into a much higher level version of.

Frankly Battier should be on an all defensive team this year, its impossible that we have the best team defense and no individual on any of the 2 defensive teams.

I find that for every game that we get this stat, we usually win.

pts - fga - 0.5*fta makes more sense. Leaders in these two stats, per game, for the entire season. You tell me which list makes more sense:

    Code:
        [B]Player pts-fga-fta Player pts-fga-.5*fta[/B]
    1 nash,steve 2.770 1 nash,steve 4.37
    2 kapono,jason 1.483 2 stoudemire,amare 4.17
    3 barry,brent 1.431 3 nowitzki,dirk 3.92
    4 barbosa,leandro 1.046 4 bryant,kobe 3.78
    5 miller,mike 1.044 5 wade,dwyane 3.70
    6 wagner,dajuan 1.000 6 martin,kevin 3.66
    7 lee,david 0.927 7 ming,yao 3.49
    8 marion,shawn 0.908 8 redd,michael 3.46
    9 battier,shane 0.838 9 lewis,rashard 3.29
    10 terry,jason 0.821 10 howard,dwight 3.14
    11 lewis,rashard 0.800 11 arenas,gilbert 2.86
    12 udoka,ime 0.731 12 boozer,carlos 2.84
    13 smith,j.r. 0.553 13 pierce,paul 2.73
    14 cardinal,brian 0.536 14 gasol,pau 2.67
    15 stoudemire,amare 0.522 15 allen,ray 2.66
    16 head,luther 0.500 16 bosh,chris 2.66
    17 johnson,amir 0.500 17 ginobili,manu 2.65
    18 mckie,aaron 0.500 18 curry,eddy 2.63
    19 bell,raja 0.492 19 brand,elton 2.55
    20 williams,shammon 0.478 20 barbosa,leandro 2.54

At the team level, efficiency matters the most. This is the stat you should look at as an indicator:

points per scoring attempt = pts / (fga + .44*fta)

For a team: Pythagorean Winning Pct

    PW%= PointsScored^14/(PointsScored^14+PointsAllowed^14)

Two places you can see how effective this is:
    (1) http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=2699109&postcount=158
    (2) Visit http://www.basketball-reference.com and click on any season for a team and then see what their "expected winning %" is compared to their actual winning %.

You can also replace PointsScored with Offensive-Efficiency and PointsAllowed with Defensive-Efficiency (durvasa's points per possesion x 100).

For a player: PER (Player Efficiency Rating)
    http://www.knickerblogger.net/stats/2007/jh_ALL_PER.htm

    Code:
    RANK	NAME PER
    1	Dwyane Wade	30.2
    2	Dirk Nowitzki	28.53
    3	Yao Ming	26.71
    4	Kobe Bryant	26.05
    5	Tim Duncan	25.86
    6	Kevin Garnett	25.3
    7	LeBron James	25.09
    8	Manu Ginobili	24.43
    9	Steve Nash	24.42
    10	Gilbert Arenas	24.41
    11	Carlos Boozer	24.1
    12	Pau Gasol	24.06
    13	Chris Bosh	23.57
    14	A. Stoudemire	23.36
    15	Elton Brand	23.32
    16	Tracy McGrady	23.09
    17	Shaq O'Neal	22.98
    18	Michael Redd	22.77
    19	Zach Randolph	22.72
    20	Carmelo Anthony	22.57
Very hard to argue with that list.

PER doesnt take into account defense, but if it did Battier would be among the league leaders.

Here's the deal. No GM would build their team around Battier. PER gives you an indication of who those players are. Don't get me wrong. Battier is a great complimentary role player. He just wouldn't be a player you build a franchise around.

But he is the perfect example of a player who exceeds his numbers. You need guys like him to win, and in the business of sports winning is the ultimate goal.

Saw this link at the APBR message board. Shows some advanced "Basketball on Paper"-style player stats for the current season (updated through 3/21).

    http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pcxmi7R75KW0jNuwE5LsnHg

Those numbers are purely based on the boxscore stats, and Battier looks very good. He contributed 7.5 "player wins" on the season and only 0.7 "player losses". McGrady has 7.7 pW and 3.6 pL. Yao's got 5.6 pW and 1.0 pL. He also shows "win shares" (described here). Battier leads the team so far with 21.5 win shares, McGrady's got 18.9 and Yao's got 14.1. So, based on these numbers, Battier is just as responsible as McGrady for our wins this season (he's played more games and more minutes, so he does get some extra credit for that). I guess he isn't just an intangibles guy; it just depends on how you look at the numbers.

But he only plays 28 minutes so he can go all out. His level of play in those 28 minutes is very Mcgrady esque.
