Signs that the Rox players get it, kinda get it, and don't get it IMO

I'm a big Mobley fan, so this is just an observation:

    2/22/03
Mobley: "Teams like (Memphis) we should beat - no disrespect to those guys, but we should beat them. This was a playoff game. We needed this win, and we took it."

Uh, any Memphis player would feel disrespected. What if Nash said, "Teams like Houston we should beat - no disrespect to those guys, but we should beat them." You should only win games that you play hard throughout in, no wise coach would say you should win just because you have a .231 better winning pct. That kind of attitude will also give up big leads. By Mobley's logic, that means Dallas should beat Houston every time they play? No wonder they lost every time they played.

Saying you don't disrespect a team, then playing like you do is probably one of the worst things a team can do, and a common thing "inexperienced" players do. Thank goodness for Rice (below).

As Mobley said, every game is a playoff game from here on out, so hopefully the Rox players will play like that every minute, not just when they're on the playoff bubble.

    2/22/03
Rice: "They've been giving us tough games, and if you look at our track record against subpar teams, we don't compare that well. The only thing we wanted to do today was come out early and play well, try to break their spirit."

Now if they could take that attitude into every game, every quarter. That's what they did in the Memphis game and won handily, but not before their old attitude came back in the 4th qtr. and they played down with a big lead.

Speaking of Rice, they should hire Jerry Rice as a role model.

    A role model, Jerry Rice??

Is this the same Jerry Rice who complained loudly when he ceased to be the #1 receiver option on the Niners? Is this the same Jerry Rice who got nailed by the vice squad at a cheap massage parlor in Mountain View, California? ;)

I'll stick with our own Rice. Thank you very much.

One difference. Nash knows the Rox are a playoff caliber team and a possible 1st round playoff opponent. Most everyone knows Memphis is not yet to that level.

If the Rockets lose 4-0 in the playoffs to the Mavs, you can bet something like this will be said even if it's the scaled down "well, we played all year for home court advantage and just came in here and took care of business". Translated...we have the better record and did what we were supposed to do.

Cuttino talks alot and the statement is out of context but...

how about if his intent was to minimize or down play the win as in...we did what we were supposed to do.

please don't make a mountain out of a molehill. Mobley described Memphis exactly the way many players say it, especially when you have been losing to those types of teams.

He has made that comment twice, the other time in a loss to Miami (i believe). He is trying to say that the pressure is on them to deliver...that they can't be losing these games to the worst teams in the league.

It is a very common statement to say, "we are supposed to beat teams like this" as in "if we expect to consider ourselves a playoff team." And you can say "no disrespect" to any individual player and mean it.

    sheesh

Sheesh is right. There's a bunch of 'em...

First of all, point taken. Find me quotes of players and coaches from championship teams who say they "should be" beating teams with lessor records, and I won't disrespect your "sheesh".

Just look at the player quotes in recaps of wins by the winningest teams over the losingest teams, and you'll see the difference. There's no need for them to even say, "BUT no disrespect..."

Jerry Rice is well known as the hardest working player in the NFL, and all of sports that's all. How's "work ethic role model"? Better?

Btw, I spent a lot time supporting Cuttino's unselfish play (ie his contract) when a lot of people were dissing him, so I don't need flack about giving him any. I just care about not making it any harder than it already is.

Y'all are great fans though for making this one helluva active post.

There is a huge amount of journalist who talk about not losing to teams like that. But you can find athletes, too. Do a google search for the string, "losing to teams like"

<ol><li> "Anytime a team from the WAC beats a Big Ten team it's big," Fresno State senior center Melvin Ely said. "We just have to focus on not losing to teams like Rice and others we're not supposed to." http://espn.go.com/ncb/columns/katz_andy/1283436.html
<li>"We shouldn't be losing to teams like (Milwaukee)," Elie said. "We should be dominating them." re: Spurs last year http://www.mysa.com/spurs/9900/9sp1224.shtml
<li>Here's Shaq dissing the Bucks, too. "We're losing to teams we should never lose to,'' said O'Neal, who had 26 points, 17 rebounds and six assists. ``We turned the ball over a few times, and just played awful defense.' http://www.beloitdailynews.com/1200/buck13.htm
<li>"We're losing to teams we should beat," said McKie after Wednesday's 93-87 loss to lottery-bound Golden State in which they were outscored by eight points in the fourth quarter. http://www.phillyburbs.com/sixers/moore/1054450.shtml
    <li>Ira Newble:
“You can use the same comments I’ve been saying every time we lose. We’re losing to teams that aren’t better than us, simply because we’re not playing aggressive. " in a Hawks loss to the Suns http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/Hawks_vs_Suns_Postgame_Quote-61490-33.html
    <li>Here's Tom Gugliotta 2yrs ago
"We had some off court distractions. We had guys that missed games. Just flat out stretches of the season where we were sub-par as a team, losing to teams we should never lose to."
<li>Tomjanovich last yr on the 15-game losing streak. "A win would be good, but it's not a cure-all," he said. "It would be good for our feeling, especially the players' feelings. I've been through this before. I don't feel as bad as when I had a full-strength team with All-Stars on it and we lost seven in a row. We were losing to teams that I thought we had more talent than. And that is a tough thing to deal with." http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/1176652
<li>Here Glen says Rockets struggle against subpar/mediocr teams implying that they shouldn't be disrespecting these teams but should beat them if they don't want to be consider subpar, too. Rockets forward Glen Rice said. "We've known all along we struggle against subpar teams. We're not giving teams the respect they deserve. ... And that's why we've lost to them." </ol>
    So, do you want more?

btw: The Glen Rice quote for #8 came awhile ago about losing to subpar teams because we aren't respecting them as an equal. It seems he explained this to the team. That is why were are finding quotes by Francis and Mobley about not disrespecting teams like that, but saying like Gugliotta, Elie, Ely, Shaq, McKie that they still need to beat those teams.

By the winningest teams over the losingest teams I said.

Winners know to shut up and play rather than stating publicly how good they are (or how much they think they know), is my point. Yeah, and I guess my previous comment was "weird", maybe we're not all great fans. Let's just go back to dissing one another's comments and the players - seems like it's common practice for losers.

    So on that note...

    Rockets88,

I didn't realize you were requiring me to find a dozen quotes. Dude, I search for one string, very simple, and came up with top teams. We could do a more expansive search, but I proved my point.

I posted Elie talking about the top contending Spurs team 3 years ago. I posted Shaq this year as a thrice defending champion. I posted Rudy talking about a 7 game losing streak when we were contenders.

Expand this to other sports and it amplifies.
