I consider myself a history buff, but I've never heard this one before. I heard on the radio the other night that Sept. 11th had some sigificance and that's why it was chosen to carry out these acts of terrorism. What the host said (can't remember who it was right now) was that about 100 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Arab armies nearly overthrew Rome but were defeated in what was sort of the last great East-West, Islamic-Christian battle. Anyone else ever heard that?? I'd love to read about it if that's so.
MadMax, I think you're thinking about the the fall of Constantinople. But that was around 1453. I think
That was 1453, and it was the end of the Byzantine empire (the Eastern Roman empire). Perhaps he is refering to some battle that took place between the Ottomans and Europeans? I dunno, but I don't think Rome has been threatened for quite a while.
DaDa, I think it was one of the bombers of the American embassies in East Africa, not Osama bin Laden.
I have heard a similar thing MadMax -- I think it was an event in the 17th century though -- I will try to look it up, but I know it was some defeat of the Muslims by a European country.
yeah, vengeance..that's what i heard..a 17th century event. achebe -- yes..but obviously with great caution!
