link I had heard us winning the lottery made the Rockets appealing to Lewis and that he might have an interest in returning home. Are there any other rumors of us doing a sign & trade?
I would not mind Lewis on the Rockets but I would not pay him what he would want. Personally I think Lewis is just playing the Rockets off on the Sonics to make the Sonics nervous to pay him the contract that he wants. I don't think anyone, including the Sonics want to pay him the max. But he is talking up Houston to let the Sonics think that he will bolt. I think it is a negotiating ploy. Chris
I also believe that Lewis wanting to be a Rocket is BS. Its a way to make sure he gets the amount of money he is looking for. He is happy in Seattle and the only way he would come to Houston is if we offer him more than the Sonics are willing to offer.
I would doubt that he would come back to Houston after they passed him up in the draft. That was horrible.
As discussed numerous times already, regardless of the contract size Lewis becomes a BYC player as soon as he signs a Seattle contract. This makes a trade to the Rockets impossible without a third team (Clipps, Bulls, Wiz) eating some cap $. Hopefully, no one is holding their breath in anticipation of the S&T. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34197
Can someone explain to me why Lewis’s situation is any different than Shandon Anderson’s last year. It is my understanding that if Lewis opts out of his contract he becomes an unrestricted free agent( just like Shandon). And as an unrestricted free agent he has no BYC clauses. Also he has met the criteria so that he has Bird rights (just like Shandon) and Seatle retains those rights. Now if that is correct than Seatle could do a sign and trade with any other team and there is no BYC rule that applies. Meaning if for example Seatle signed Lewis for 10 million (hypothetical so don’t go nuts) and then traded him to houston, they would have to receive back within 15% +/- of that 10 million in value (Glen Rice 8.8 million would qualify). Why would this be any different than our Shandon for Rice trade last year. Unless there is a specific rule that only applies to unrestricted free agents who used a player option to obtain there free agency. It would almost specifically have to say that a player who options out of his contract will fall under the BYC rules for sign and trade purposes. Otherwise Lewis situation is no different than Shandon’s was last year. So lets say Lewis is signed for 10 million and then traded to Houston simultaneously for the rights to a recently drafted Amare Stoudamire along with Glen Rice and a future first round pick. Why wouldn’t that work under the current CBA rules. Correct me if I am wrong, but unless there is a CBA rule that applies specifically to players who option out of their contract than an even trade such as I suggested would work under the current CBA guidelines. Byt the way I am not holding my breath for a sign and trade. I just don't think the byc rule applies. But I would like to corrected if I am wrong.
BYC has absolutely nothing to do with clauses in your contract or being unrestricted vs. restricted, or player opt outs. The reason we were able to make the Shandon for Rice trade was because we were under the cap. We were well under the cap. It only applies if you're over the cap, and you give a player a raise of more than 20%. Seattle, for all intents and purposes will be over the cap. If they are under the cap at all (which is TBD, because we don't know the exact cap right now), they wouldn't be far enough under to give Lewis anywhere near the money he wants. For example, if we had been over the cap, Moochie Norris would be a BYC player. We were under the cap, and therefore he has no BYC tags on him, which makes him easier to trade. Larry Coon's FAQ for BYC That should explain in more detail if you're still not sure. I expect us to offer him the MCE if we don't get a quality SF in the draft. If he wants more, oh well.
Say Rashard takes the MCE like Shanderson. I'm willing to bet the Rocks do the whole wink-wink thing to get Rashard to agree to it. Question is, if you assume that the Rocks either have to max out Rashard after a year or three or pull another S&T a la Shanderson/Rice, would you still be in favor of it? Personally, I don't know. I'd probably promise Rashard whatever to get him to sign (hey, he's used to that from the Rockets ) and let his subsequent contract take care of itself. But if we were to max him out, would we be able to keep all our (future) starters? (Yao, Griffin, Rashard, Cuttino, Steve) Unlikely, in my opinion.
Thanks Nikestrad. I read it once before but somehow I didn't get it. I reread it now and it makes sense. (It is complicated) So basically no one can sign Lewis except Chicago the Clippers and Seatle unless he is willing to take the exception. He would be throwing away millions if he did that. Although I have heard the Sonics have no intention of giving hime the Max. Still I am sure they will offer him more than the exception. Well if he really wants to play for Houston then come on we can give him more later.
