Is that the equivalent of giving back an engagement ring?

Unless the French renounce the historical American gift--their freedom, and resubmit to German occupation, no.

    Damn it!

We can't give the Statue of Liberty back! How the hell would we defeat the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man should he decide to rear his ugly face again!

    Think People! ;)

The irony would be too rich if a bunch of anti-French protesters went out and tried to throw vegetables or deface the Statue of Liberty. I mean, is there a bigger symbol of America than the Statue of Liberty?

I wouldn't send it back. Maybe EBay it to pay for the war, but don't give it up for free.

Everyone knows you don't need the Statue of Liberty to defeat the Marshmallow Men .... when they come, just cross the streamers. However if a government building is seized by a river of negative slime, hell yeah we're screwed without the statue.

Now Clutch, you specifically told us not to cross the streams, that crossing the streams was bad.

As long as it doesn't say "France" or "French" on it, then keep it. If it says "France" or "French" on it, just change the name, and keep it anyways.

I realize this question has to be a joke, but honestly, there are few things that symbolize America more than the Statue of Liberty. I tear up every time I see the damn thing.

I think of the millions of immigrants arriving on America's shores and their first glimpse of our country (a place they felt so strongly about they abandoned everything just to come here) is Lady Liberty with her torch standing as a beacon in the safe harbor -- how could there ever be a more appropriate symbol for the hope and promise we offer to others?

France gave the statue to us more than a century ago as a gift from one democracy to another. How foolish to let some petty squabble (which will have blown over in a few years' time) obscure the greater meaning of the statue.

I've posted this once before, but it certainly bears repeating here:

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. ``Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Naw, they got screwed on that deal, although that would be ironic, because they needed the money to pay for their war.
