So just 1 day right after his wedding, Yao Ming arrived into Beijing and participated at a Coca-Cola sponsored 1-year Countdown activity to 2008 Olympics.

And right there, at 00:00 hours of August 8, he and the other most influential and international renowned Chinese athlete, another Shanghainese, Liu Xiang, the world's #1 athlete/Olympic gold medallist in 110M hurdle, his fiercest competitor (for lighting the torch or as the national flag bearer), initiated the official count-down.

And during the event, he proudly displayed his wedding ring on his left hand.

Coca-Cola Brings Olympians LeBron James and Yao Ming Together in New Global Olympic Commercial

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With just one year to go until “08-08-08” and the Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, The Coca-Cola Company is announcing plans for a new global Olympic television commercial featuring Olympians LeBron James and Yao Ming.

The Olympic Games in Beijing will represent the largest union of cultures in the history of the modern Games, and the new ad will highlight James and Yao as “Olympic Ambassadors” who symbolize how the world comes together over a Coca-Cola during the Games. The new commercial will be part of the global “Coke Side of Life” campaign.

The Coca-Cola Company has proudly partnered with the Olympic Games for almost 80 years, longer than any other sponsor. The Company and its brands espouse the same ideals of unity and physical and mental well-being that are a central part of the Olympic Movement. Yao Ming’s new association with Coca-Cola was announced in July when Coca-Cola China unveiled its “Coca-Cola Olympic Star Team,” a group of athletes who will be part of a variety of Coca-Cola programs in China including special packing, advertising and promotions. LeBron James has been involved with the Company since 2003 and has taken part in multiple activities for brands Sprite and POWERADE. This new ad will be the first global Coca-Cola commercial for both athletes.

And Yao Ming will be a busy man in the next 2 days.

He and Ye Li will appear in tonight's countdown celebration at Tiananmen Square.

And tomorrow night, he and Ye Li will host a dinner (sort of their wedding reception) for their national team team mates.

The Beijing Olympic Committee (BOCOG) promises a "spectacular and splendid evening gala" marking the one-year countdown to the Beijing Olympic Games on August 8, says Zhao Dongming, head of the cultural events department of BOCOG.

The celebrations will start at 7pm, lasting around three hours with a program of Chinese and Western performances at Tian'anmen Square in the Chinese capital.

International Olympic Committee(IOC) President Jacques Rogge will extend invitations toward more than 200 delegates from National Olympic Committees around the world to the international event. This is the first time the IOC is hosting the countdown event in a host city. Normally it is marked in Lausanne,the IOC's headquarter located in Switzerland.

Some 10,000 people are expected to watch the festivities, along with Chinese leaders, IOC senior officials and representatives of Olympic sponsors.

The performances including world famous pianist Lang Lang, a Swedish artist will sing, "China's Moon", an Inner Mongolian musician will play on a traditional instrument, and some 100 Chinese singers will perform, "We Are Ready," a song written and composed specially for the one-year countdown.

Zhao also said blockades will not be set up in Tian'anmen Square specifically for this gala, but there would be a stage set up near the center of the square, by the countdown clock due to the security reason. "We don't want to disrupt the general public from visiting the square," he explained.

He added that if it rains that day, the festivities would be moved indoors to the Great Hall of the People.

Chinese Central Television (CCTV) will broadcast the gala live worldwide.

Beijing will have other countdown events starting in the next few days, including people's fitness activities, arts performances, Olympic Treasure Exhibition, and Olympic families visiting the city will mark the whole nation's participation to the Games.

Co-host cities, Qingdao,Shanghai,Hong Kong,Tianjin,and Qinhuangdao,have also organized their own countdown events.

That would be Liu Xiang, the winner of the gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics in 110m hurdles, whose popularity trumps Yao's in China.

AFAIK, neither of them are gay.
