Anybody know anything about concrete? I replaced my sidewalk about 6 months ago. Without advance notice, the city says they are replacing the water mains on my street and must tear out portions of everybody's sidewalk including my brand new sidewalk. Anyway, I now have a hairline crack in a section because they drove their tracker over it. I argued and they finally said they'll fix that one 3 foot section. I'm wondering if I might be smarter just to leave it alone. QUESTION: Is there a long term structural concern about the sidewalk if they cut out and replace just one section. Currently, it is essentially one slab about 20 feet long. Afterwards, I'd have one 3 foot section and one 17 foot section. Is it structurally better to endure the hairline crack? Also these guys are a bunch of idiots with no regard to property. So my fear is they could cause more problems than they fix.
If you are in Houston, the cities definition of "fixed" and your definition of "fixed" may not be the same. Good luck.
personally, i wouldn't worry too much about it, hairline cracks happen all the time with our heat and humidity.... even if they were to replace the portion of the sidewalk, another crack could possibly appear as the concrete starts to settle... it might be best to leave it alone IMO
I'm sure that is true but they told everybody that they would put everything back as good or better than they found it. Yea right. They drove their front-end loader directly onto my yard not long after rain and now I've got gigantic tire impressions in my front yard. All they were doing was pouring sand over top of mud so it would "look" better. Meanwhile, my yard now looks like crap but the mud looks nice!!!
If I want to watch my father turn red, all I have to do is mention the city and storm sewer replacement. They had the front of my parents house torn up for a year. Broke a bunch of sprikler heads near the street, didn't put the driveway back to the same size as it was before and they had frogs breeding in the water hole that sat in front of their house for months. Let's just say the crews who did the work probably refer to my dad as the crazy man of his street.
