Voila! Tsunami Victims... let me give a fan something and also give Tsunami Victims something... ho-hum... Yahoo: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...19&u=/nm/20050104/people_nm/nl_bonds_quake_dc I am sick to my stomach. Like he couldn't just donate without having to do something else. That was the first thing I thought, but this poster in the Yahoo threads put it best:
WTF? You don't see this...? He's AUCTIONING... he's not coming up with the money himself. JEEZ... c'mon, DM... you should see it... he can't give off his own STEROID-MADE income, but from someone else's money... "Oh, yeah, I gave money to the Tsunami effort" <-bologna Oh, and BTW, I forgot to post: http://www.thebrushback.com/Archives/makeawish_full.htm
It's not Bonds - It's the Giants that are doing all this. I'm not going to defend Bonds with regards to steroids, or his attitude - but this isn't something you can pin on him. This sounds like the Giants were going to have a bunch of baseball-related auctions this year(like throwing out the first pitch, meeting Bonds, etc) and after the tsunami hit, decided to donate all the proceeds from those auctions to the relief efforts.
That was pretty sad Swoly, there are already plenty of valid reasons to hate Barry Bonds. Also, how do you know he hasn't already made a contribution?
Well, I hated him anyway, before this "Giants" gesture. Why can't Bonds step up and say: "On top of the auction money, I will give 2 million of my ster... er, earned money" ?
You know, I never resist the opportunity to bash Bonds... but this is uncalled for. We don't know if he has donated or not. He's not obligated to donate one cent. I can't see faulting him at all in this situation, especially after Puedlfor's explanation.
I agree that just because you don't hear about someone donating, doesn't mean it hasn't been done. I don't know if that's the case with Bonds or not. Some people are attention whores, and you hear about everything they do for charity. In a situation like this, though, I understand people wanting their contributions to be known publicly in hopes that it inspires or motivates others to contribute to the cause as well.
I suppose it's not really any different from the charity/ good cause auctions and fundraisers you see every day. I don't think it's a whole lot of skin off his nose just to meet someone, but... what can you do? At least someone will end up donating to the tsunami relief. (And Bonds too, hopefully, at some point... but his money is probably all going to his lawyers these days.) The big question is: why is our society so obsessed with a few celebrities that a private meeting with someone is worth several thousand dollars? Why are they intrinsically any better or more interesting than anybody else? I mean, for the rest of us... Me: "How much would you pay me to hang out with you?" You: "Why should I pay you? You should pay me. Well, if I'm bored I'll do it for free. And if you help me with my chemistry homework I'll give you $20." Me: "Oh, keep the $20. I can't take it. That's a lot of money. I know how you would feel. My advice is free, even if it should be a professional service. I'll... ummm, find somebody else to pay me. At least I have a regular job." But apparently these celebrities' time and attention is worth so much more.
Well, allright, some of you think that 1. we don't know if he has already contributed. My response to that is that he would have already had a statement, had he already contributed. That's not the case... he hasn't said squat. 2. he's doing something. In exchange for... ummm... what? Popularity? Gimme a break. What I wanted to do was report this to bbsers... I don't care about being ME the one reporting, or that I just plain don't like Barry for this, but you gotta get more classy than "I am going to give SOMEONE ELSE's MONEY". At least ADD to it, or double it. Or even, just say he will add ONE MORE MILLION to whatever the Auction makes. That's all I wanted to add to the report.
He's donating time. If somepay pays $10,000 and he gives it all to charity, that's $10,000 that wouldn't have been given most likely. Thus Barry Bonds would be as responsible for the money going to charity in this case as he would be if he donated the money himself. There are a lot of reasons to dislike Barry Bonds but this isn't one of them...
