Over every coach in the league!!

    1. Jeff Van Gundy, Rockets

It took a few years, but Van Gundy has the Rockets playing the kind of suffocating defense he lives for. Through Wednesday, Houston was limiting opponents to 91.2 points a game and 42.6 percent shooting, a league best. That stinginess was instrumental in helping the Rockets win 20 of the 32 games Yao Ming missed with a broken bone under his kneecap.

It's Jeff's way. Like it or not...So far, I think he has done the best job since being in Houston.

i really don't understand how anybody can jump on JVG...the guy has done an AMAZING job this season.....forget all teh BS that you guys bring up about his rotation, his stubbornness, etc...if at the beginning of the season, I told you that Yao and Tracy would miss HUGE amounts of games, what would you be happy with...if I promised you a 50 win season, you would take it in a heartbeat.....all you need to do is look at th W column to see the incredible job he has done.....not many coaches could have pulled it off and had his players belive they could pull it off....give credit where credit is due....you JVG bashers will have to wait till next year (hopefully not) to get him fired....

No it isn't. It's saying that Sloan will not be outcoached. You can do a fine job coaching and still lose a series if your players aren't as good or do not match up well. For example, Riley v. Rudy in the first championship. Few people would say Rudy outcoached Riley (although it was likely a draw), the Rockets just had superior talent overall and a guy named Hakeem.

Finally, Jeff is getting a little credit. We have all heard from players that were supposed to be coach killers like T-Mac that he is one of the best- if not the best coach in the league. Trust me- I would much rather have Jeff than Phil "sit on my ass doing nothing while my team falls apart" Jackson.

Haha...found this little snippet on page 4.

Need A Refund

    Stromile Swift, Grizzlies
    2006-07 salary: $5.4 million
How long must we wait before Swift is classified for what he is -- a marginal role player worth maybe 20 minutes each night? Almost seven full seasons have passed while coach after coach seeks to extract Swift's athletic talents on a consistent basis. Year after year, Swift ultimately frustrates.

No one has mentioned it yet, but Stro is under *yet another coach*, a lame duck coach with zero defensive strategy and with an offensive game plan that would seem perfect for the Stro show -- just run and gun with abandon. And yet Stro can't get playing time (he's averaging just over 15 mpg in his last 10 games) on the worst team in the league. Anyone still think we paid too much for Battier?

    great post.

I can understand people not liking JVG or JVG-basketball (I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a team that plays like PHX every night), but it infuriates me when they rip on him THIS SEASON. Say what you will about his faults, but he has done a damn fine job so far this season.

I like the idea of JVG for COY but looks like Sloan has more voters so he will probably take it. His team did get a lot better from last year. I think if we didnt have taht really weak stretch after the ASG and had a little more consistency, JVG would look a lost better. Plus our record in teh games that matter is weak though most were either without yao or tmac.

i don't know where this crap about 'it took a few years but jvg finally got them to play defense' comes from. the rockets have been a solid defensive team for years now. even before jvg, though he certainly made us better.

    02-03: 43.3% fg, 92.3 points
    03-04: 41.1% fg, 88 points (jvg's first year)
    04-05: 42.3%, 91 points
    05-06: 42.9%, 91.7 points (injury riddled year)

nice to see jvg get props, not so nice to see the writer apparently has no idea what the rockets have been doing the last 4 years...

Umm, the Rockets have vaulted to the top of the defensive rankings this far, no team has even been close since last November, and he's done it with his strangest roster in years. Paul never said the old Rockets didn't play any defense, they've just gone from (take it on the offensive side of things) Rip Hamilton-level production, to Kobe Bryant-level production.
