    [SI.com] Fantasy Central- Potential Deals

This article talks about potential deals and how it could affect your fantasy team. It mentions houston being a darkhorse for a kidd trade and houston being a possible destination for a payton trade. i really have no idea if this writer has any credibility but i guess just take it as it is.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/fantasy/01/10/happy.funball/index.html

There have been plenty of trade rumors this season, but only one major deal so far (Vince Carter making the move to New Jersey). That's not a huge surprise, given that most deals don't happen until after the holidays. And finally, the reign of terror known as the holidays has ended. Let trading season begin.

Who might get dealt by the Feb. 20 deadline? And how could a trade affect their fantasy value? Let's take a look at some of the major players from the Eastern Conference:

    • Jason Kidd, G, Nets:
    Possible destinations: Minnesota, Denver, Dallas
Darkhorses: Houston, Golden State, San Antonio

Here's what I wrote about Kidd a few weeks ago:

"A lot of people seem convinced that trading for Vince Carter was a way to keep Jason Kidd in New Jersey. I feel exactly the opposite. Maybe the Nets got better, but they can hardly be considered title contenders (and therefore, why would Kidd want to stay?) And in Vince Carter, the team acquired a marquee name who will draw fans to the arena. Throw in the fact that New Jersey desperately needs size, and you should expect Kidd to be wearing a new uniform before the trading deadline."

There have been whispers to that effect recently, though not a lot of rumors on where Kidd might go. In October and November, there were a lot of talk involving San Antonio and Dallas. But the Spurs have the second-best record in the league, behind Phoenix, and probably figure they're better off with a young Tony Parker than an old Jason Kidd.

Dallas, Minnesota, and Denver appear to top the list. Whether the Nets want expiring contracts (Minnesota), talent (Denver), or a combination of both (Dallas) could determine who is the frontrunner. There's also a chance that Kidd could stay in New Jersey for the rest of the season, since both he and the team will have more options during the offseason. But there's little question that he will be playing in a different city next season.

Regardless of where Kidd plays this year, he should post great numbers. He had his first triple double last week, and has steadily improved since returning from the surgery that sidelined him for the first six weeks of the season.

    • Gary Payton, G, Celtics
Possible destinations: Minnesota, Houston, L.A. Clippers
    Darkhorses: Seattle, Atlanta

Payton has been solid for the Celtics, averaging 12.6 pts, 6.2 ast and 1.2 stl. But his contract ends after this season, and he has made no secret of his desire to play on the West Coast.

The Celtics have no want or need to take on salary, so unless they can get a good player (unlikely), they will probably only deal Payton if they get an expiring contract in return (as well as a draft pick or two -- does anyone love draft picks more than Danny Ainge?). Payton could also find himself involved in a package deal involving any combination of Ricky Davis, Raef LaFrentz, or the human cap-fillers known as Tom Gugliotta and Michael Stewart.

Payton could see his assists go up if he's traded, since he would likely be going to a team better at making their shots than the Celtics. Even in a place such as Minnesota (where everything runs through Kevin Garnett), Payton would likely post numbers closer to 14 pts and seven ast. Houston appears to be the only bad fit for Payton; there are too many other point-guards (Bob Sura, David Wesley) and it's Tracy McGrady that brings up the ball and runs the offense, anyway.

I just pasted the part that talked about the rockets and im not sure why he mentioned houston being a possible destination for payton because he contradicted himself in the last sentence.

what do we possibly have to offer for kidd? he said the nets want talent (we don't have) or expiring contracts (we don't have enough)

the closest thing to fair that we can do cap-wise with the C's is mo and spoon for lafrentz and gary. we can add our pick but i still don't think that gets the deal done.

He meant that it would be a bad fit for Payton from a fantasy standpoint (less assists)

i dont want to get rid of that 1st round pick unless we are trading for someone under 30. So unless the celtics take Mo, I am not sure what we could offer them for GP. But hey Danny Ainge has made worse trade before (Walker for LaFrentz for ex.)

    1. We don't have nearly enough for Kidd.

    2. Kidd is under a HUGE, HUGE contract.

    3. I don't think we anything Boston wants.

But if we did get Kidd, JVG would be out in a couple years tops.

neither one of these trades would ever go down...i have no idea where these magazine websites such as SI and ESPN get off just throwing team names out there and passing it off as "insider info". If EITHER deal goes down..i'll throw 20 in the tip jar. Quote me..I dare ya.

Just a thought, a potential trade involving Mo + Wesley or Sura + Picks for Kidd + Fill-ins should work cap wise, and NJ might very well be interested in it because they have been looking around for a decent PF. Plus they get some future potential thru the picks (might be 05 first round + 06 second round)

Guys, I've read of a potential deal by the Suns again. I guess they'll gonna get McCarty. Another firepower for them... If we could move Mo asap...

Getting Kidd would more than likely be out of the realm of possibility for the Rockets. Although Kidd is still a great player in many aspects, he is a player that appears to be somewhat breaking down in the latter half of his career; and also one that carries a large contract in terms of both years and amount remaining.

Payton, on the other hand, is more of a possibility for the Rockets. But aquiring Gary, from strictly a basketball perspective, would be a lateral move for Houston. It has been well documented that Gary has lost more than a step as he was routinely beaten off the dribble in last year's playoffs. Payton is a lateral move for the Rockets despite him probably being an upgrade in the talent at that position, primarily due to the notion that he is not the answer to Houston's problems at the point. Could he help temporarily? Sure, but is he going to put the Rocket's over the top? Absolutely not. However, although unlikely, a deal for Payton would make sense for Houston if it were able to somehow move a contract in the process.

I have to wonder if the Sonics and Clippers, both being on the West coast, are likely destinations for Payton.

    http://celtics.bostonherald.com/celtics/view.bg?articleid=65285

While Gary Payton is starting and playing well, Ainge may be facing a similar situation with his veteran point guard. Payton has been an exemplary soldier but would like to be moved west to be closer to his family. His mother has been diagnosed with cancer and will start chemotherapy soon. Payton would also like a better opportunity to chase a championship.

Sources say Ainge is looking to see what Payton can bring from other clubs but won't give him away. It's possible that a first-round pick would be enough to pry The Glove loose.

I personally would love Payton on this team ... he's having a good season and would be a massive upgrade over Strickland/Barrett. But a half-season rental for our first round pick? I'd pass. The Clippers pick could be a lotto one, so they would have to get creative... the Sonics pick looks to be headed for the 20's. If Seattle is interested in bringing him back, that is a good possibility, but they have Daniels and Ridnour.

    Why not the Glove

The Boston Herald reported in an article that:

"While Gary Payton is starting and playing well, Ainge may be facing a similar situation with his veteran point guard. It's possible that a first-round pick would be enough to pry The Glove loose."

GP is exactly the play-maker we need. I say David Wesly, Bruce Bowen, and a second round pick or David Wesly and a first round pick is an offer both clubs would agree to. We have all the criteria GP is looking for and can offer a great deal to the Celtics.

If we had Bruce Bowen, that might work. I don't think they want Ryan Bowen.

I wouldn't trade wesley straight up for gp, let alone as a package, that's just being honest.

he's very underrated right now, wait until his shot starts falling.

Bruce Bowen this isn't the Spurs Forum!

The "Glove" is worn out and old. I'll pass.
