GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Former NBA player and University of Florida standout Vernon Maxwell was jailed without bond in Alachua County for a probation violation, according to jail records.

Maxwell turned himself in to authorities Sunday, the Gainesville Sun reported. He violated probation by not paying the state for his supervision, possessing a controlled substance and failing to pay court-ordered child support, Spencer Mann, of the State Attorney's Office, told the newspaper.

Mann said Maxwell was arrested this past year in North Carolina for drug possession charges.

Maxwell, a three-time all-Southeastern Conference selection, played at Florida from 1985-88.

During his 13-year NBA career, Maxwell helped the Houston Rockets to NBA titles in 1994 and 1995.

It was not immediately known if Maxwell had a lawyer, and a phone message left afterhours with his former attorney was not immediately returned. The phone at the State Attorney's Office in Alachua County rang unanswered early Tuesday morning.

This is not Maxwell's first child support problem.

Maxwell was jailed in Jan. 2005 in Washington state after his arrest as a fugitive on an outstanding arrest warrant from Florida. He was transferred to Alachua County from Georgia in 2004 to face a felony charge of failure to pay more than $160,000 in child support.

Maxwell was later released on bond and told to stay in the county until the case was resolved. A warrant was issued for his arrest in Dec. 2004 on when he failed to appear for a hearing.

I just think this world we live in is not sophisticated enough to deal with Vernon's skills and capabilities. He's like the Henry David Thoreau of his time in terms of creativity and civil disobedience, except HDT could not sink game winning threes and take Mike Jordan to l'escuela like VMAX. Should Vernon pay child support? Probably. But its nothing a little budget counseling and a good accountant could not fix. Some people are poets, whose minds can not wrap around things like deadlines.

Unless that deadline is a buzzer at the end of an NBA finals game 7, and it is time to sink a championship clinching three. Those deadline he knows about.

Let us know how we can help you Vernon!

    Best regards,
    All True Rocket Fans
