Back spasms sideline LeBron for Tuesday's game
    Posted: Tuesday March 13, 2007 7:24PM

CLEVELAND (AP) -- LeBron James was a late scratch Tuesday night from the Cleveland Cavaliers' game against the Sacramento Kings because of back spasms.

James did not mention the injury during his pregame interview, and team spokesman Tad Carper said it was coach Mike Brown's decision for James to sit.

James felt something in his back Monday night and then again after the team's shootaround Tuesday. He was to travel with the Cavaliers to Memphis on Wednesday and be re-evaluated.

The All-Star forward was in the training room when the game started.

Little-used backup Ira Newble started in James' place. Newble hit three 3-pointers to make it 18-11 early and draw some cheers out of the disappointed crowd.

The Cavaliers had won five straight behind James, who has been on a tear recently.

He was averaging an NBA-best 33.3 points on 53 percent shooting since Feb. 15 for the surging Cavaliers, who pushed their record to a season-best 13 games over .500.

Before his recent surge, James appeared to be playing tired, which many blamed on him spending part of his summer playing for the U.S. team in the world championships in Japan.

He was settling for jump shots instead of attacking the rim and didn't seem to have the same first-step quickness.

That began to change last month when James helped the Cavaliers start a run that has them within two games of Detroit in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers won at Detroit last week for the first time in three years, led by James' 41 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

"I'm just mentally trying to prepare myself and my team for the playoffs," James said Sunday.

James missed two games in January with a sprained right big toe. Going into Tuesday night, the Cavaliers were 2-0 without James this season and 8-2 without him since he joined the team in 2003-04.

And the Cavs went on to defeat the Kings without the King....

I am sick and tired of those Lebron James apologist that he dont have good teammates to help him. James actually have decent talents surround him, players like Big Z, Gooden, Hughes, Sasha are all quality players! The cavs cant win not because of his teammates, is because James failed to lead them, at least at this stage of his career!

James is a golden boy of nba these days and is sad to see nobody dare to point out his shortcomings!

You can be sick and tired all you want but you don't know much about the Cavs and you must not watch them very often. It's great they picked up the slack tonight but Bron's teammates have no guts and choke like dogs too often. If you watched game 7 last year against the Pistons, LeBron torched them in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, the Pistons doubled up LeBron and his jittery teammates completely flopped. The same thing has happened this year many times because the Cavs did almost nothing to improve their team. Big Z is a big zero of a worthless dog most of the time. Drew Gooden is consistent like a yoyo. Varajao remains nothing more than a "hustle" player with few skills. Donyell Marshall has been a bust. Same for Damon "Just Look At Me" Jones. Larry Hughes has been such a gigantic bust the Cavs would give him away almost for free. Eric Snow and the washed up David Wesley have no business being on the same roster (at least Snow is a serviceable player). I don't understand what your definition of a "quality player" is.

When you add in Mike Brown as the coach, you have a squad that usually does nothing but wait on Superman to deliver them. It's great that Pavlovic, Hughes and Big Z all seemed to have their best games of the season tonight against the crashing and burning Kings. Hope this marks a turning point for them but it isn't indicative of what they normally produce. Pavlovic is the only other player on the Cavs with guts but he's got to improve his shooting %. I admit when his shot is on the guy is like an assassin. At least he's a building block. Daniel Gibson might be also but neither guy plays at a high level right now.

LeBron ceased being the NBA so-called Golden Boy a long time ago. Just read what the pundits say about him. He's been analyzed so much this year he should feel violated. Did you read the comments about him when they lost to the Mavs in Dallas a couple of weeks ago when he literally carried them on his back down the stretch but missed shots at the end? There are quite a few LeBron doubters out there who point out his shortcomings. I have doubts myself, and like most people, put him a notch below Wade and Kobe because of their clutchness. The free ride he used to get is looooong gone.

So you can be sick all you want but I suggest learning a little more about the Cavs. It may help you feel better about LeBron. No need to be "sick" and "sad" unless you are a Cavs fan who wants a smarter front office and a better coach.

I'm a die hard Cavs fan (I've got the Price and Daugherty rookie cards to prove it). Although this is a harsh assessment and you've probably gone 50% further than I would go, it's in the same ballpark as my opinion. Big Z is getting softer by the day. Hughes seems to enjoy coasting. And you can forget all the other teammates. I'm a fan of Varejao and Pavlovic this year though. They play hard and contribute. Pavlovic has really broken out this year. Can't say much for the rest of the team, who seem to like giving the ball the Lebron and wait for soemthing to happen. Yes, I think there was a stretch where Lebron was not playing at full speed, but he's turned it on now and shown why he's considered one of the top 3 guys in the game. It's the Eastern Conference, but he's still put his team ahead of teams who have Wade, Shaq, Arenas, Bosh, etc. And they aren't too far behind Detroit, who seems to be the only legit team that isn't a level below the Western Conference contenders.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't think back spasms were at all uncommon among athletes. Unless there's some larger underlying problem, I don't think there's any reason to be too concerned.

OT: I can't make threads, so I gotta resort to this :(

BUT. Lebron choke/clutch alert! 2:56 mins left, Charlotte and Cleveland tied, let's see if King LBJ comes out in the clutch.

I completely forgot about this thread. You have my sympathies, especially if you are a longtime Cavs fan. Over a long period of time, they are one of the most hopeless franchises in NBA history. Why the Cavs didn't do more to improve over the summer is a mystery to me. You guys need to clean house. The only sacred ones should be Bron, Pavlovic and maybe Gibson. When Varajao develops some skills other than "hustle", I might become a fan of his. Why the Cavs pursued Larry Hughes over Michael Redd is another mystery.

Good luck in the playoffs. I'm rooting for the Cavs, Bulls or Wizards to make the Finals because the Pacers have no chance.

Once again tonight, Donyell Marshall shows he's a worthless chump, Larry Hughes is a bricklayer, all Varejao can do is "hustle" and Daniel Gibson has a ways to go. The Cavs showed they have a lot of spunk by fighting back from large 4th quarter deficits but they just don't have the horses to beat good teams unless Bron goes off. Granted, he shouldn't have waited until the 4th quarter to take over.

Their defense was M.I.A. during stretches too. And teams must start realizing the Devin Harris is completely one-handed.

I'm sure alot of people have figured that out, still tough to defend when he's going 100mph just blowing by players that are backpedaling...that kid is quick...he's going to get around 10 mill a year once his rookie contract is up...it'll be interesting if Dallas pays that since Terry makes that much and tied up until 2011/12

    Cavs...typical eastern team

Ha, yeah thanks. As sad as the Cavs have been, the Browns have been right there alongside them. Until Lebron, of course. When I have kids I will make them root for any team except a Cleveland team, it's a cruel existance. If memory serves me correct, Redd was our first choice but the Bucks offered him more money then we could (or willing to?). Hughes was the best of the leftovers, and he plays like it. I am a Varejao fan though, I guess it's similar to how people may not understand how Rox fans appreciate Hayes so much.

As for the game tonight, you've summed it up. Few of these guys are good at what they're SUPPOSED to be good at. I'm looking at you Hughes and Marshall. At this point Z isn't even in the conversation. I am so glad we have one player who ended up developing in Pavlovic. That makes us 1 for 89 or something. Anyways, the East is so weak that a one-man team like this still has a good chance at making the Eastern finals.

IIRC, the rumors were that Redd would be the Cavs first choice. He said they didn't court him and made it plain he wasn't their first choice. Since Redd is an Ohio guy it seemed like a natural fit and he was quite surprised. Of course the Bucks offered him more because they could but the idea of going back to Ohio and playing with LeBron was the lure. The Cavs just chose the wrong guy. That is my recollection.

On Cleveland teams in general, I've got several former co-workers from the area and one very close friend. They are all fanatic diehard Browns fans, who are much more fanatical than Oilers or Texans fans by a mile. Most of them are also hard Indians fans. You are the only Cavs fan I've ever conversed with. Like Houston, your NBA teams seems to be a distant 3rd, though maybe LeBron has temporarily changed that. Looks like the hard luck with your home teams will continue for a while. Try and keep your chin up. The Cavs do have a puncher's chance of reaching the NBA Finals.
